Day One Summary, from Alex Pavulans

Mens:

Group A - Ukraine is holding the seed, beating both Russia and Gibraltar, but not without effort. Russia and Gibraltar face off tomorrow for the remaining quarterfinal spot.

Group B- This group saw a disappointing tournament for group top seeds and last years nr 3 Croatia. Losing to both Malta and Isle of Man, they are out of the medal contention. The battle for the last quarterfinal spot between Poland and Malta is all of a sudden a battle for the first place in the group.

Group C - Latvia is holding the seed with a convincing win over Serbia 3-0, less convincing was 2-1 against Belarus, where Sergey Drandalush put up a good 5 game win over Gunars Prizevoits. Here the second quarterfinal spot is still up for grabs, settled by the match between Belarus and Serbia tomorrow.

Group D - Estonia looking strong, not even conceding a game so far, and only a disaster can prevent Poland for taking the other quarterfinal spot. Russia 2 is surprising with a good win over 3 group seed Gibraltar 2.

Womens:

Pool 1 - Top seeds and defending champs Estonia are crusing, as ar Malta. The match between the two is sure to be a highlight tomorrow. Debutants Latvia and Ukraine both got their first wins splitting the matches.

Pool 2 - Russia has a strong team this year and split with favorites Poland. So every point will actually count in tomorrows matches. Isle of Man has yet to be tested, playing the two weaker teams today, but are facing both Poland and Russia tomorrow.
