Finnish Open 2008
Mikkeli, 11-16 Feb, $20k

16-Feb, Final:
Tuominen in home triumph
Poku Salo reports

Olli Tuominen became the first Finn to win the men's Finnish Open in
the tournaments 30 years long history. Previous winners have been, among others, been Jahangir and Jansher Khan, Rodney Martin And Rodney Eyles.

Tuominen didn't get a good strat to the match and Bianchetti took an early 4-0 lead. Tuominen came back and despite getting a 7-6 lead the Italian took the game 11-9. Bianchetti was again stronger in the beginning but Tuominen fought his way from 7-9 to 12-10 and equalled the match. In the third Tuominen dominated and at one stage it looked like Bianchetti was giving in. The fourth game showed that Bianchetti  was still very much in game and took the match to the fifth game. Now Tuominen was playing his best squash of the match and forced Bianchetti to a few errors and the Finn took the game and the match.

"I played a lot better than in my previous matches. I was happy to get the second game, as it's much better to be at one game all than
two games down,", said Tuominen after the match.

Bianchetti was pleased with the way he played, although a defeat always feels bad. "Seems I always play five games with the Finns, and unfortunately often lose", said Bianchetti.

15-Feb, Semis:
Top two in Mikkeli final
Poku Salo reports

Olli Tuominen managed to get his game going in the semis of the Finnish Open. Having struggled in the two earlier rounds Olli now played close to his own standard. Jesse Engelbrecht of South Africa never really had a chance of stopping Tuominen, who now meets Davide Bianchetti in saturday's final.

"It's good I got a 3-0 victory because the final tomorrow will be much tougher. My game wasn't quite what I would like, but hopefully tomorrow will change that", said Tuominen after his match.

Bianchetti dismissed South African qualifier Clinton Leeuw, who scored the best result of his career. Bianchetti got a good start and only lost two points in the first game. Leeuw came into the game and got a 7-5 lead in the second but failed to score more points in the game. The third went to Leeuw 11-9, but he couldn't keep up the pace and Bianchetti went through to the final.

"It seemed that he  only started in the second. He is very fast and got every shot back, I was often in trouble. I'm looking forward to playing Olli tomorrow!, said Biachetti after the match.

14-Feb, Quarters:
Tuominen escapes again
Poku Salo reports

Olli Tuominen was in trouble again in the quarterfinals of the Finnish Open in Mikkeli. Simon Rosner was up two games to one before Tuominen got his game going. When he did, there was no question about the winner.

Jesse Engelbrecht was too strong for Badr Abdel Aziz, who managed to beat the third seed Scott Arnold in the first round. The first two games were even but after that Engelbrecht was dominating and took a comfortable victory.

Qualifier Clinton Leeuw surprised the crowd and himself by reaching the semifinals. Mathieu Castagnet,  who had a tough match in the first round, just couldn't just keep up with the pace of Leeuw.

The fourth semi-finalist is Davide Bianchetti, who was a semifinalist also in 2000 when the previous men's Finnish Open was played. Bradley Hindle couldn't find a way of stopping Bianchetti who took a straight games win.
