Mario Dominguez talks to the new South American Champ ...
Rafael Alarcon (31) from Brazil was recently crowned South
American champion in the VI South American Championships held in
Asuncion, Paraguay in early September. He now adds this first
continental title to his successful career. It’s been a long time
since a player from Brazil, Kiko Frisoni won his last South American
title in 1989. This is what he told us about this experience.
Rafa,
how does it feel to be the new South American champion?
To me this is the crowning of my work ... I have worked so much in
this sport and I think that this result could not have come in a
more special time in my career, to become South American champion
been 31 years old, is not for everyone.
Before the event you were the favourite to take the title and
the results confirmed so as you didn’t lose a single game in the
individuals. Are you aware of the importance of this achievement, or
only in a few years you will look and say 'Look what I've done? "
To be honest I did not think about that yet, I’m aware that here in
South America there are good players and that I beat them in a very
professional way, well-focused from beginning to end; Of course this
will continue there for a few years but to me a victory is a victory
...
What do you think about the organization of the event, how
treated people you in Asuncion?
The championship deserves congratulations, we were given good care
and most importantly, all within the timeline, from transportation
from the airport to the closing ceremony ... CONGRATULATIONS ...
What
are your plans for the near future?
For now try to maintain this level of squash that I play, at 31
years old is not easy ... play by the PSA tour becomes more
difficult all the time and there we go, while maintaining that
level, I’ll continue ...
And for a not-so-near future?
Is still early to make plans, the squash has much to be developed
and operated, I think I can do a good job in sport, I am eager to do
something. At the moment, I am the best worker on court in South
America, who knows if I can do that off court as well ...
Will Rafa defend his title in Uruguay 2009?
Of course, this is a goal to reach, I’ve supported and always will
support the squash ... I will always be present ... don’t think YOU
WILL GET RID OF ME ...
A big hug to everyone.
