RAMY IS GROWING UP …
I
just can’t believe how time flies. Yes, it’s a bit of a cliché, but
still, it seems only yesterday that Ramy was still a junior, making
so many unforced errors, and looking like a puppy, legs and arms far
too long for him kind of feel…
I’ve watched him come from a hard working qualifier to the top of
the World. I saw him grab his first major title in 2007 in Toronto.
I saw him fly over the moon after he beat Shabana the first time.
I’ve watched his body, not enough looked after, cracking up in Qatar
2007, and letting him down when he really wanted to be at his best,
for the two World events, the individual in Bermuda, and the teams
in Chennai.

An excellent start to 2008, where he clinched the TOC title, his
second Canadian Classic, and then at home, he wins Hurghada. But it
all goes bad again. In Kuwait, he gets injured, still makes it to
the final, but loses against the Prince of Egypt in three.

Refusing
to listen to his body, he gets to Liverpool for the British Open.
Enormous mistake. Unable to fight, a troubled young man can’t finish
his second round match, and admits that he’s got to ask himself some
questions to review his career orientation…
Troubled,
injured, sad, losing a bit his way in his new star status, not
knowing which voices and advice to listen to, which direction to
take, Ramy seems lost at sea. It was to be expected, I guess. So
talented, so young, so mad, so unpredictable, so adorable, so…
Legend Ramy….
But now the young man is getting wise. He is changing his training
routine, he is trying to correct the errors made, and chooses
carefully the advisers he listens to. With his family, sponsor and
close friends around him, he is taking a new start. At only 21.
Legend Ramy is a true raw talent, who doesn’t how or why he beats
his opponents. He just feels the shot, feels the exact way he’s got
to play. Don’t ask him to analyse, all is done on pure instinct.
That
makes him incredibly hard to read for his opponent, but also so
fragile to himself… And makes him so loveable I guess. Because Ramy
is adored all over the planet by people of all ages and cultures.
I'm one of them...
Happy birthday, young man. See you in Manchester.
