15-Jul-08:
Basil Hebden, Bournemouth's
'Mr Squash', passes away ...
Basil was ‘Mr Squash’ in Bournemouth for many years being the
professional at the Meyrick Park squash courts. Every Easter for
about 25 years he organised a four day squash festival centred
on Meyrick Park but because of the numbers – 40 teams of 5
players was the largest entry I seem to recall – also used four
other local clubs.
In the late 60s early 70s several world ranked Pakistanis came,
in the late 70s and early 80s Shawcross, Brownlee, and Norman
(all world champions) came along with many other international
players.
For many the partying was just as important as the squash.
His funeral will be held at St John’s Church, Christchurch Road,
Boscombe, on Wednesday 16 July at 1pm.
Followed by a private family cremation at 2pm and thereafter a
Wake at Bournemouth Sports Club, Chapel Gate, Hurn (just west of
Bournemouth Airport).
It was Basil’s wish that his final send off should be more like
a party, and one of his favourite expressions was "aren’t people
nice?", which hopefully tells you something of the man ...

Last

Luciano Alves Barbosa, panamerican champion in 2000,
national champion in 2004 and member of brazilian squash team,
died suddenly after a fatal aneurism.
He was only 31 years old! Brazilian squash is mourning our
excellent player, but more than this, our great friend.

08-Jun-08:
CELEBRATIONS IN ORDER…
 That’s
how Mister Press Howard Harding announced the good news
to me on Saturday night. “I became a grandfather tonight -
celebrations all round!!!!!”.
That is like shaking a red rag in front of a bull!
In
a few seconds, I knew everything - that the Dad was Christian,
Howard’s eldest son, that the mum, Emma, was fine and
glowing, that the baby was a boy, and his name, Noah.
”I’m just relieved that everything went ok,” confessed Howard,
“and you can be sure that Noah will be playing squash as soon as
possible. Christian and Emma met at Reigate Squash Club!”
Well, from Steve and I, and from the whole of the Squash
Community that Howard serves day in day out, we offer him our
heartfelt congratulations…
MORE ADDITIONS:
On the subject on new arrivals, congratulations to PSA board
member Tony Hands on the addition of Mae Nambela
to his family ... more to follow ... |
What's in a name ???
It's true that we sometimes struggle with players' names,
particularly some Asian, Arabic and those ever-changing Egyptian
ones, but it seems as though we're not the only ones - a Pakistani
newspaper report from the current
CAS International mentions one
Errol Frank and a certain Muhammad Alshorebiggi.
Well, we know them better as Aaron Frankcomb and Mohamed El
Shorbagy, but it's good to know it's not just us ...

Meanwhile, new European Champion Isabelle Stoehr seems to have gone
down a bomb in Slovakia, where she's been adopted by the
local TV station
as Isabelle Stoehrová ...

House of a
Thousand Rackets
Well, no, we haven't actually counted them, but judging by these
photos we think it's a fair estimate!
The
house in question belongs to Samer A. Al-Khateeb of the Saudi
Arabian Oil Company and a board member of the Saudi Squash
Federation - referred to by Ziad Al-Turki as "the grand
daddy of Saudi squash".
You may remember that in the first Saudi International in 2005
Framboise visited his house in Al-Khobar and was suitably
impressed by phase one of his project to decorate his house with
squash rackets of all ages, size, shape, brand and condition.
Well, Samer hasn't rested on his laurels, and has now completed
Phase Two of the project ... can't wait for Phase Three !! |
