Squash Trophy 2008

05-Oct, Final:
Nielsen takes
Turnstone Trophy
Tommy Berden reports
Rasmus Nielsen claimed his maiden PSA Tour title after
scoring a 42 minutes win over Lewys Hurst in the final of the
Turnstone Squash Trophy 2008.
The Danish ace came out firing against the 22-year old Welshman and
overpowered his tired looking opponent in the opening two games. The
pattern continued in the beginning of the third, but Hurst, the
world number 148, fought his way back into the match, taking the
third game after saving three match balls.
The 25-year old Nielsen, seeded third in the new PSA Satellite event
in the city of Tilburg, wasn’t to be denied though and held off
stiff opposition from a spirited Hurst in the beginning of the
fourth game to clinch the Turnstone Trophy: 11-6, 11-3, 11-13, 11-6.
The valuable world ranking points that come with it will surely see
him improve on his ranking of 138 in next month’s PSA ranking to a
position that he is worthy of based on his performance in Tilburg
this week.

05-Oct, Semis:
Local interest ended as
Hurst shocks Bennett
Tommy Berden reports
Lewys Hurst created a major upset in the semi finals of the
Turnstone Squash Trophy 2008, defeating world number 50 Dylan
Bennett in clinical fashion.
The Welshman, ranked almost 100 places below his opponent on the PSA
World Rankings, turned in an impressive performance against an out
of sorts Dutch player, to reach his first PSA Tour final of his
career. It only took the fourth seeded Hurst 33 minutes to complete
his unexpected victory over the event’s favourite: 11-9, 11-4 and
12-10.
In tonight’s climax Hurst will take on Danish ace Rasmus Nielsen
after the third seeded hard hitter ended the ‘fairytale’ of Dutch
qualifier Bastiaan Meulenbelt.
Nielsen, who will also be playing his maiden PSA final, was in total
control of the 24-minute match against his 20-year old opponent, who
ran out of options against the strong Dane who seemed to be hitting
winners at will throughout the match: 11-4, 11-3 and 11-8. |

04-Oct, Quarters & Round One:
Order
restored in
Turnstone Quarters
Tommy Berden reports
After a morning of first round upsets, some semblance of order was
restored in the evening's quarter-finals in Tilburg as the top three
seeds reached the semi-finals of the Turnstone Trophy.
Top seed Dylan Bennett was the first to reach the semi
finals after defeating England’s top junior Adrian Waller in an
entertaining and high quality match. The 24-year old from Eindhoven
needed 44 minutes to see off the challenge of the tall Englishman,
who showed great potential in a four game match which delighted the
crowd.
The Dutch number two won the first and had to leave the second to
Waller, before finding himself 6-8 down in the third. Bennett then
played some great points to secure the vital game, which seemed to
take the sting out of the game of his opponent: 11-9, 9-11, 11-9 and
11-4.
In tomorrow’s semi final the world number 50 will now play Lewys
Hurst. The fourth seeded Welshman overcame Ondrej Ertl from the
Czech Republic in a five game match: 11-2, 9-11, 11-3, 10-12, 11-7,
which lasted over an hour.
The second semi final will be between Rasmus Nielsen from
Denmark and Dutch qualifier Bastiaan Meulenbelt. The third
seeded Scandinavian needed the full five games and 69 minutes to
overcome the spirited challenge of Piedro Schweertman in a hard
hitting contest: 11-4, 10-12, 11-3, 8-11, 11-8. The 20-year old
Meulenbelt, hailing from Nijverdal, completed an impressive comeback
against his one year younger compatriot: 5-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-6,
11-7.
Seeds scatter as qualifiers shine in Tilburg
Three qualifiers made their mark during the opening round of the
Turnstone Squash Trophy 2008. English top junior Adrian Waller
overcame a first game loss against Lukas Jelinek from the Czech
Republic in his first ever PSA tournament to set up a meeting with
the event’s top seed Dylan Bennett.
The 24-year old from Eindhoven looked to be cruising against Olivier
Pett from England leading the second game 7-1 after winning the
first comfortably as well. Pett fought back however to take both the
second and third games and seemed on his way to an upset when he
tied up the fourth game at 9-all. Bennett wasn’t to be denied though
as he used his experience to come through the difficult situation,
eventually winning 11-7 in the fifth.
In the bottom half of the draw qualifiers Bastiaan Meulenbelt
and Sander Kock will meet later tonight as both Dutch
youngsters moved into the quarters in contrasting styles. 20-year
old Meulenbelt needed 75 minutes to see off the challenge from
Sierra Leone’s Issa Kamara, while his one year younger compatriot
didn’t even need to take off his tracksuit as second seed Bradley
Hindle pulled out last minute onsite after sustaining an ankle
injury in his last practice session before the event.
Piedro Schweertman also made it through to the last eight for
the host country after beating fellow countrymen Bart Ravelli in
three tight games. The Dutch number three will now face Dane
Rasmus Nielsen, who survived a long tiebreak against Peter Creed
from Wales in the third and final game. The last quarter final will
be between fourth seeded Lewys Hurst (Wales) and Ondrej
Ertl (Czech Republic), who both recorded four game victories
over respectively Mark Fuller and Rene Mijs.

No surprises in
Turnstone qualifying
Tommy Berden reports
Host country the Netherlands added two more players to their main
draw tally during the Turnstone Squash Trophy 2008, after Sander
Kock and Bastiaan Meulenbelt both recorded comprehensive
wins in the last qualifying round of the new PSA Satellite event in
the city of Tilburg.
19-year old Kock knocked out compatriot Brian Ernst in straight
games (11-2, 12-10, 11-7), while the one year older Meulenbelt
defeated Mikkel Pedersen from Denmark in 31 minutes: 11-6, 11-4,
11-7. Kock now takes on the event’s second seed Bradley Hindle
from Australia, Meulenbelt is drawn to play Sierra Leone’s Issa
Kamara in the opening round.
It wasn’t all plain sailing though on qualifying day for the Dutch.
20-year old Frank Hartkoren found the going tough in a ‘battle of
lefties’ against England’s Adrian Waller, who displayed an
enormous range of shots en route to a 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 victory.
Mark Fuller also emerged victorious in the last match of the
evening against local opposition. The young Englishman denied
22-year old Martijn Kock the chance to follow in the footsteps of
his younger brother Sander, who qualified earlier in the evening,
with a 11-7, 11-8, 11-4 score line. |
