Razik & Ranieri win national squash titles
TORONTO
– Shahier Razik of Toronto and Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo,
Ont., were crowned the men’s and women’s champions on Saturday at the Harrow
Canadian Squash Championships which took place this week at the National
Squash Academy.
In a battle of the top-two seeds in the men’s final, number-one Razik took
the title for the fifth time in six years defeating Shawn Delierre of
Brossard, Que., 11-6, 11-9, 11-0.
Although the match lasted over an hour, thanks to a let ridden second game,
it didn’t match some of the epic battles the pair have had in the past.
Andrew McDougall of Calgary won the bronze.
In the women’s final, Ranieri overcame a 4-8 deficit in the second game en
route to her second consecutive national title defeating fourth-seed
Stephanie Edmison of Toronto 11-6, 11-8, 11-4.
Ranieri, seeded second, scored seven unanswered points to catch, pass and
win that second game.
In the third place match, Samantha Cornett of Ottawa defeated top-seed
Alexandra Norman of Montreal in straight games. Edmison had upset Norman in
Friday’s semifinal.

Edmison upsets top seed
TORONTO – Stephanie Edmison of Toronto, a former Canadian
university champion, upset number-one seed Alexandra Norman
of Montreal in a five-game semifinal thriller on Friday
night at the Harrow Canadian Squash Championships.
With the victory Edmison, seeded fourth, meets defending
champion and second seed Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo, Ont.,
in the women’s final.
Ranieri advanced by defeating Samantha Cornett of Ottawa in
four games.
On the men’s side, the final will pit defending champion and
top-seed Shahier Razik of Toronto and second seed Shawn
DeLierre of Brossard, Que. It’s a highly anticipated
showdown since the pair has waged some of the most epic and
longest battles in Canadian squash history.
Razik defeated Andrew McDougall of Calgary in four games
while DeLierre beat third-seed David Phillips of
Pointe-Claire, Que., in straight games.
Competition ends Saturday at the National Squash Academy.
The women’s final is at 3 p.m. and the men’s final at 4 p.m. |

Top-four
seeds into semis
TORONTO- The top-four seeds in both men’s and women’s play,
including number ones Shahier Razik of Toronto and Alexandra
Norman of Montreal, advanced to the semifinals on Thursday
at the Harrow Canadian Squash Championships.
In the men’s quarterfinals, Razik, the defending champion,
defeated Dane Sharp of Ajax, Ont.,; number-two Shawn
DeLierre of Brossard, Que., upended Matthew Serediak of
Toronto; third-seed David Phillips of Pointe-Claire, Que.,
ousted Andrew Schnell of Calgary and fourth seed Andrew
McDougall of Calgary beat Tyler Hamilton of Dundas, Ont.
In the women’s quarters, Norman took Geneviève Lessard of
Montreal; number-two and defending champion Miranda Ranieri
of Waterloo, Ont., beat Nikole Todd of Saskatoon; third-seed
Samantha Cornett of Ottawa defeated Marnie Baizley of
Winnipeg and Stephanie Edmison of Toronto ousted Melanie
Jans-Burke of Vancouver. |

Calgary’s
Schnell brothers to meet
TORONTO- Graeme Schnell and his younger brother
Andrew Schnell, both of Calgary, each won their second
round matches on Wednesday at the Harrow Canadian Squash
Championships and will meet in the round of 16 on Thursday.
There were no upsets in the men’s round-32 as the top-16
seeds all advanced including defending champion and
number-one seed Shahier Razik of Toronto, number-two
Shawn DeLierre of Brossard, Que., and number-three David
Phillips of Pointe-Claire, Que.
Andrew Schnell, a former Canadian junior champion, is seeded
sixth while Graeme is at number-11.
On the women’s side, there was only one-seed that didn’t
advance to the quarterfinals on Wednesday as Nikole Todd
of Saskatoon eliminated number-seven Seanna Keating
of Toronto.
All the other seeds advanced to the final eight including
number one Alexandra Norman of Montreal, number two
and defending champion Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo,
Ont., and number three Samantha Cornett of Ottawa.
Competition continues through to Saturday at the National
Squash Academy.

Razik and
Alexandra top seeds
TORONTO- Shahier Razik of Toronto is the top-seed in
men’s competition and Alexandra Norman of Montreal
the favourite on the women’s side for the 2011 Canadian
Squash Championships set for May 4-7 at the National Squash
Academy in Toronto.
Razik,
ranked 28th in the world, has won the national title four
times in the last five years. He is coming off his first Pro
Tour victory this season at the Northern Ontario Open in
Sudbury, Ont.
His biggest challengers this year include second seed
Shawn Delierre of Brossard, Que., who rocketed up to in
the world rankings in 2010 from the mid 90’s up to
number-49.
"This is a very important tournament," said Delierre,
currently at number-55 internationally. "It’s a big title
that I would like to have. I’ve shown over the past year
that I’ve been able to rise to the occasion and I hope to do
that again this week.’"
International
veteran David Phillips of Pointe-Claire, Que., is
seeded third, Andrew McDougall of Calgary fourth and
Tyler Hamilton of Dundas, Ont., fifth.
The British-born Norman is seeded first with defending
champion Miranda Ranieri of Waterloo, Ont., standing
at number-two. Samantha Cornett of Ottawa is seeded
third, Stephanie Edmison of Toronto fourth and former
national champion Marnie Baizley of Winnipeg fifth.
The round of 32 and round of 16 matches are all on
Wednesday, the quarterfinals, Thursday, the semis on Friday
beginning at 5 p.m. and the finals on Saturday starting at 3
p.m.
