National Closed for Winchester
Preview from Matthew Yates
The 28th December sees the start of the first IGT-e Squash
Academy PSA tournament at the Winchester Club in
Hampshire.
The only English National Satellite of the year will see the next
generation of English professional players competing for world
ranking points and the chance of progression into some of the big
world events later in 2012.
Boasting an impressive line-up of players and an expected crowd of
over 250 for the three days of competition it is shaping up to be an
event full of drama with plenty of atmosphere.
Local interest comes from both ends of the scale, the No. 2 seed
Alex Phillips is a coach at the club as well as playing for the
Winchester professional team, alongside him there are four exciting
juniors for whom this is their first professional tournament and
they are desperate to prove they can make it against the established
order.
The dark horse is also local and comes in the shape of Phil Bull,
a player whose stylish nicks and flowing attack has the potential to
upset any player in the world on his day.
Lewis Walters stands tall as the No. 1 seed knowing that
victory will mean a place in the World’s top 100 for the first time
in his career. Also of note is the No. 7 seed Michael Harris
who has been rising up the World rankings quickly and could reach a
position of 230 by winning and hotly tipped youngster James
Earles from Hull who is already established in the top 300 at
the tender age of 18.
With free admission and drinks promotions courtesy of IGT-e
it promises to be three days showcasing the excitement of squash so
make Winchester Squash and Tennis Club one of the places you visit
during the next three days!
