Conveniently placed before the British Junior Open, the
Dunlop Pontefract Junior Open, existent since the mid
eighties has attracted, as it invariably does, an
International entry.
Andrew Cross, Malaysian national coach and long time
Pontefract player, will be bringing his squad of talented
youngsters, including the outstanding Eain Yow Ng.
Pontefract also welcomes players from the USA, Japan and
India.
If there is a pathway for young players to progress,
Pontefract’s pathway is well worn. Under head Coach and Guru
Malcolm Willstrop. Pontefract has produced two world number
ones in Lee Beachill and James Willstrop.
Sam Todd is showing promise of the highest order. He is not
alone either, since six Pontefract Juniors have been ranked
1 in country in 2015. Elliot Ridge (17), Ellen Cooper (15),
Sam Todd (U13), Layla Johnson (U11), Asia Harris (U11) and
Ben Beachill 9U11).
The Championship will be directed by Terry Dudley and his
team. Terry has run the event for over 25 years also
masterminded Pontefract’s Ladies team to 12 National Club
Championships and Six European team titles.
Pontefract the first British Club to host the European Club
Championship in 2010 will again be staging the event in
September 2016.
