Moving On
After
five years of hard work developing and growing String’s
Squash & Fitness, Tewkesbury, former Scottish National
Champion Wendy Maitland and her husband Marcus
Jones are calling it a day. With a heavy heart, Wendy &
Marcus have decided to put the squash club on the open
market with a view to selling it to like-minded people that
can see the potential and huge rewards available from owning
such a great club.
Over the past five years Strings has grown in to a
welcoming, family orientated club, with a strong community
focus. Wendy & Marcus have endeavoured to create a
‘traditional’ squash club while reaching out to a new
generation of squash players. They have also thrown the
doors open to the wider community in the area, allowing use
of the facilities to local action groups and assisting
fund-raising activities for local groups and societies.
During their tenure, Wendy & Marcus have nearly trebled the
club membership through a number of successful initiatives
that have encouraged participation in squash as well as
aerobic and gym memberships. It is, however, the junior
squash program that has been the real success story.
Following the community theme, Strings has linked with 13
local primary schools offering free squash coaching as part
of the school physical education curriculum. This is now an
annual fixture which has resulted in many of the children
coming to after-school coaching. This gateway is the
foundation to Strings junior development program. Following
England Squash’s Junior Pathway, the children begin playing
Mini-Squash and progress to the String’s Academy. Currently,
the number of juniors regularly attending this program tops
60. The target, Strings Academy, has boasted many County,
Regional and National players over the past 5 years and
continues to produce talented youngsters and is Wendy’s
proudest achievement in the club.
Strings boasts 4 squash courts, gym, bar
and function room. It offers numerous fitness
classes as well as squash group and individual
coaching. On top of that, it includes a 3 bedroom
flat on site.
The last five years has been a wonderful experience, made
possible with the support of the members and volunteers who
have always been there with help and advice. This sense of
belonging and involvement is a crucial part of the club and
is something Wendy & Marcus have been keen to encourage.
In May last year, Wendy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl,
Meg. The arrival of this precious gift has been a
wonderful experience and all the members have been
wonderfully supportive since her arrival. Family life is
something that Wendy & Marcus want to invest more time in
and although Strings is still going strong, there have been
a number of growth opportunities that cannot be aggressively
pursued.
This has become a source of great regret for Wendy & Marcus
and feel that the squash club deserves to grow and reach
it’s full potential. It is for this reason that they have
made this difficult decision. This is a unique opportunity
to purchase a well established club in a beautiful location
on the edge of the Cotswolds, in a county with a strong
squash heritage. This would ideally suit someone involved in
squash, playing or coaching.
