17-Jul-05:
INTI Squashathon Report
Alex Wan reports from Kuala Lumpur
The Squash Club of INTI College Malaysia today smashed the 30-hour
non-stop squash marathon record previously achieved in year 2000.
With the help of players over 60 players ranging from top
professionals in Azlan Iskandar, Bradley Ball,
Adrian Grant and Line Hansen, to beginners, they have
played a total of 42 hours of non-stop squash.
The event started off with a bang – an exhibition match between
Iskandar and Grant, who had the crowd gasping in awe at their sheer
speed and also the ability to pickup near impossible shots. Hansen
then took Elvin Keo, a top Malaysian junior to court before
members of the public made their way onto the court for their turns.
A total of over 50 people participated in this historical event,
with the core made up of roughly 15 people who were practically
living in the vicinity of the court. Sponsorship of food and drinks
were aplenty and the squash “addicts” made themselves at home.
Four of the core comprised of Elvin Keo, Kam Hing Chong,
Valentino Bong and Ivan Yuen, the top four juniors of
the country who are preparing for the world junior men’s next year.
It provided members of the public to play with them and also as a
platform for them to test their endurance on court.
Today at 11am local time (0400GMT), Iskandar took to court with Ball
for the finale. Once again, squash fans and the public were treated
to squash at the highest level. Both the pros came out dripping with
sweat and were greeted by fans who were rushing for their
autographs, while all they wanted really, was some air!

15-Jul-05:
INTI Squashathon
When you think of a squash marathon, it's generally of the
24-hour variety. Well, this weekend in Malaysia, they'll be turning
that round and going for 42 hours ... Alex Wan reports
...
Following a rather disastrous last weekend where squash was so near
yet so far from getting into the Olympics, a group of highly
enthusiastic youths across the continent here in Malaysia will try
to make a difference.
Students at the Inti College, one of the most renowned
private higher education institutions in Malaysia will aim for a
place in the Malaysian Book of Records for the longest squash
marathon.
This event is fully sanctioned by the Squash Rackets Association of
Malaysia and will see up to 100 squash players from all levels and
age groups will vie to play non-stop in the glass-back court for a
period of 42 hours.
Play will begin at 6pm (local time, 1100 GMT) on Friday, 15 July
2005 and will end at 12pm (0500 GMT) on Sunday, 17 July 2005.
Last year, a charity auction was held in Malaysia and we were lucky
enough to have the company of Lincou, Gaultier and Ball to be
around. This time round, this squashathon will feature home boy
Azlan Iskandar, Adrian Grant and Bradley Ball, all
in Malaysia now to train up for the upcoming
Pakistan Open and also Line
Hansen, who will be the rose amongst the thorns for the weekend.
The event is the brainchild of the Inti College Squash Club and aims
for the following:
- Establish a record-breaking feat
and have the squash enter the Malaysian Book of Records.
- To help create a mark in the
record books for the fast gaining popular squash game here in
Malaysia.
- To create an opportunity for
squash players from all walks of life to gather and stand united
as one in creating local squash history.
- To provide an opportunity for
social squash players to watch the professional level of the game.
Apart from the squash, a host of other events have also been
planned to create a carnival like atmosphere. Amongst them include
live band and martial arts performances.
