02-Feb, Quarter-Finals:
Canadians Surge Through To Winnipeg Semis
Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema stands in the way of the Manitoba Open
boasting an all-Canadian semi-final line-up in the west Canadian city of
Winnipeg.
The second seed from The Hague reserved his place in the last four of
the PSA Tour event at the Winnipeg SRC when he beat Egypt's No6 seed
Omar Mosaad.
Anjema will now face Shahier Razik, who survived a domestic duel with
fifth seed Shawn Delierre. But the third seed from Toronto needed 75
minutes to extend his unbeaten record against his Montreal-based
compatriot, eventually beating the fifth seed.
The other match will feature a Toronto/Edmonton clash. Top seed Graham
Ryding, from the Ontario capital, came from a game down to beat fellow
Canadian David Phillips.
His opponent Matthew Giuffre, the No4 seed from Edmonton, ended the run
of Adil Maqbool - overcoming the Pakistan qualifier. |

01-Feb, Round One:
Maqbool A Surprise Winnipeg Winner
Pakistan's Adil Maqbool caused the only upset on the opening day of
action in the ADL Optical/Rodenstock Manitoba Open Squash Championship
when he beat Australia's No7 seed Steve Finitsis in the first round of
the PSA Tour event at Winnipeg SRC in the west Canadian city of
Winnipeg.
The Dubai-based qualifier twice came from behind to overcome the
higher-ranked Australian in 68 minutes to reach his first Tour
quarter-final.
Maqbool, aged 18, will now face one of five Canadians who have made it
through to the last eight. Matthew Giuffre, the No4 seed from Edmonton,
despatched compatriot Andrew McDougall, a qualifier, in just 29 minutes.
Canadian wildcard Josh Struthers, the Assistant Pro at the club, battled
for 31 minutes with second seed Laurens Jan Anjema, but the Dutchman
ultimately prevailed to set up a quarter-final clash with Egypt's Omar
Mosaad, the sixth seed.
Anjema is on course to meet top seed Graham Ryding in the final. Ryding,
the Winnipeg-born world No22 from Toronto, defeated Czech number one Jan
Koukal. |
