27-Jan-05:
ASF Elections 2005
Eswar Ramachandran reports on the
Asian Squash Federation elections ...
In order to provide more exposure for Asian players to compete in
European league and PSA tournaments, the Asian Squash Federation has
decided to set up a house in a central place in Europe.
To fecilitate this, the ASF has decided to appoint a coach, who will
be based in Europe.
Disclosing these decisions taken at the 25th annual general body
meeting of the Federation, N.Ramachandran, who was today re-elected
unanimously as its president for second four year team, told a press
conference that the meeting proposed to conduct Asian Championship
in two tiers. Hitherto, both the top squash playing countries and
developing countries were competing together. The proposal would be
two separate tournaments -- one for top playing countries and the
other for developing countries.
Maj.S.Maniam, of Malaysia, who is a consultant coach at the India
Cements Squash Academy here, has been entrusted the responsibility
to work out the modalities for the Asia House to be set up in
Europe. Maniam, Tony Choi (Hong Kong) and Rehmat Khan (Pakistan)
would submit a white paper on the proposal to have two tier
tournaments, Ramachandran said.
Meanwhile, Hussain a.Maqsseed, Chairman, Kuwait Squash Federation
told Squashsite that the 27 member countries, who attend the meeting
were unanimous in their decision requesting Mr.Ramachandran to
continue for another four years.
‘This decision followed the tremendous good work rendered by
Mr.Ramachandran. Despite his busy schedule as Executive Director of
a cement Corporate in India, Mr.Ramachandran spends lot of time and
money for the game and more than these, we found him to be a
visionary’ Maqsseed said adding
‘the two tier system being introduced is a major step forward’.
The meeting also decided the calender of events upto 2009.
Chinese Taipei and Kuwait would host the Asian Senior championship
for 2006 and 2008 respectively; likewise the junior championships
have been allotted to Hong Kong (2007) and India (2009). The first
and second Junior Individual championships would be held at Nepal
(2006) and Korea (2008).
As for the elections, Ramachandran said David Mui (Hong Kong) and
Yousef H.Mohsen (Kuwait) along with Won-Kwan Kim (Korea) were
elected as vice presidents and he re-nominated Srivatsan Subramaniam
(India) and hockey Olympian, Muneer Said (India) as secretary and
treasurer respectively.
