Clean Sweep for Malaysia...
Major Maniam reports from Taiwan
For the first time in the history of this championship one
country has won all the four titles at stake, two individual winners
and both the team titles.
In the the finals of the men's team event the order of play was
3-1-2. As expected Timothy Arnold of Malaysia could only offer token
resistance to the fast improving Farhan Mehboob of Pakistan, going
down in 3 games.
Azlan came on strong to down a fighting Mansoor 3-0 to set up the
decider between Ong Beng Hee and Shahid Zaman.
Shahid has not had a good championship. If Pakistan had any hope of
him getting out of this rut they were disappointed as he played very
average squash against a determined and sharp Beng Hee. He too went
down tamely in three.
The weather may have been wet and dreary but the spirits were surely
high and charged. Overall an extremely successful event, and all
credit must go to the Squash Rackets Association of Chinese Taipei
who had worked extremely hard to put up a splendid show, especially
as this was their first ever Asian Championship.

Women's Gold for Malaysia
as Men struggle into final ...
Major Maniam reports from Taiwan
Malaysia retained the women's trophy yet again, as they
faced little resistance in a match that at times seemed like a
foregone conclusion.
The men's semi final between India and Malaysia went right down to
the wire. India started positively (rather expected) with Gaurav
Nandrajog beating an error prone Nafiizwan 3-1.
The second match, the best one of the day was between Azlan and
Ritwik. As training partners they knew each others' game very well.
A highly charged Ritwik came on strongly though he was 2 games down.
He fought to equal the score. The fifth was an extremely exciting
affair with the Indians relishing the prospect of getting into the
finals for the first time in their lives. When it came to the crunch
points Azlan hung in marginally better.
The third game was a one sided affair with Ong in full control. His
fluid movement and deft touches in front was a delight to watch. He
completely outclassed Saurav who gave everything he had.
Malaysia face old rivals Pakistan in the final tomorrow, and are
favourites to win, which would give them all 4 titles for the first
time ever.

Fright for HK in Semis
Major Maniam reports from Taiwan
All matches today went as predicted though Hong kong women were
given a fright in the second semi final.
Korean No3 Kim Gahye withstood tremendous pressure to beat Karen Lau
in three games. In fact she came from 2-8 down in the third to win
10-8. At this point Korea really fancied their chances. Seasoned
campaigner Christina Mak was in no mood for compromise though, as
she sailed through in three games with token resistance from Korean
Ahn Eun Tschan.
Malaysia will start as favourites to retain the title in tomorrow's
final which starts at 6p.m local time on the all glass court.
The men will play the semi finals tomorrow and both Malaysia and
Pakistan are expected to go thru.
