18-Aug, Semis:
Another five for Corren...
Gary Denvir reports
Mike
Corren is fast turning into a five game specialist at the Auckland
Open at the North Shore Squash Club.
The third seeded Australian is through to the final of the PSA
World Tour event, after upsetting second seeded compatriot Steve
Finitsis 11/7 in the deciding fifth game of a gruelling 73 minute
semi-final encounter. Corren also won his quarterfinal in five,
taking 82 minutes to dispose of another Aussie, Cameron White.
He will now need to dig deep into his energy reserves for
tomorrow's title decider against top seed Kashif Shuja. The kiwi
number one is through to the final after beating fourth seeded
Australian Ryan Cuskelly in four.

Top Four Through ...
Gary Denvir reports
The top four seeds will contest the semifinals of the PSA World
Tour's Auckland Open, but third seeded Australian Mike Corren
barely survived the quarterfinals at the North Shore Squash Club.
Corren was given a run for his money by fellow Aussie Cameron
White, eventually prevailing 11/3 in the deciding fifth game of an
epic 82 minute battle.
Top seed Kashif Shuja is safely through to the last four
after beating fellow kiwi Campbell Grayson in four games, while
third seed Ryan Cuskelly also won in four against fellow
Australian Matthew Karwalski. Second seed Steve Finitsis
continued the trend of winning in four, in a 42 minute scrap
against compatriot Luke Margan.

16-Aug, Round One:
Karwalski whips Wong
at North Shore
The first round of the Auckland Open at the North Shore Club saw
six of the seeded players going through to the quarter-finals,
with Australian qualifier Matthew Karwalski causing the
biggest upset.
 Karwalski,
who came to prominence when he won May's Merredin International as
an 'unknown', overcame Hong Kong's third seed Wai Hang Wong in
four games. Unseeded Cameron White, who recently won the SA
Open despite being semi-retired, took out seventh seed Martin
Knight in straight games.
Top seeds Kashif Shuja and Steve Finitsis both eased
through their first round matches. |
Trans-Tasman rivalry in Auckland
Preview from Gary Denvir
Trans-Tasman rivalry looks set to play a dominant role at the PSA
World Squash Tour's Auckland Open next week.
Three New Zealanders and four Australians are included in the
eight seeded players for the one star event, with fifth seed Wai
Hang Wong from Hong Kong the exception.
New Zealand number one Kashif Shuja has been given top billing for
the Open, but the world number 44 is expected to face some stiff
competition from the Australian invasion, which includes Steve
Finitsis, Mike Corren and Ryan Cuskelly - all ranked in the top
100 in the world. New Zealand based Corren also has the added
advantage of playing on his home courts
at the North Shore Squash Club.
Martin Knight and Campbell Grayson are the other two seeded kiwi
players, while Josh Greenfield, Sam Atkins and Graeme Wilson will
also line up in the opening round.
Auckland set to impress
Top seed Kashif Shuja looks forward to the event ...
Squash-loving
New Zealand is in for a treat with the PSA one star Auckland Open
coming up. The Open has grown and progressed through the ranks in
the last few years from a local event to a PSA Satellite and on to
a one star last year.
This has made the event the biggest event held in New Zealand for
a very long time and an event that the players look forward to
each year.
This year the Auckland Open is to be held at the magnificent
lakeside North Shore Squash Club from 15-19 August.
Squash New Zealand once again recognised the need of a PSA event
for local players to play and the juniors and club players to
watch. They are the main supporters of the event alongside Squash
Auckland and the hosts North Shore Squash Club.
With six New Zealanders in the main draw, there is a good
opportunity for us all to get good ranking points and improve our
rankings. After all the travelling, it will be great to play at
home. It is also great to see our Aussie and Asian counterparts
joining us for the event.
Squash in New Zealand is on the rise. The players are doing well,
the local circuit is flourishing, the squash enthusiasts are
putting in their support, the clubs are keen to host squash
players and the crowd loves watching the action. It's great to see
our sport do well and it will get even better.

On behalf

1-star Event.
Auckland welcomes internationals & locals to Auckland to compete
in the biggest event held in New Zealand in 2007.
Good Luck to all players, we look forward to seeing you during the
event.
