19-Aug, Semi-Finals:
Upsets Galore in Auckland
Gary Denvir reports
World number 25 Jonathan Kemp is on target to take full
toll of his first ever PSA squash tournament in New Zealand. The top
seed has cruised into the final of the Five Star Finance Auckland Open
at the North Shore Squash Club, with an 11-6 11-7 11-7 victory over
seventh seeded Australian Jason Mudge in the semifinals.
Kemp will face another Australian, Mike Corren, in the title
decider, after the third seed battled past fellow Aussie Steve Finitsis
in four.
Meanwhile, top seed Shelley Kitchen had two straightforward
victories in the women's WISPA Tour event. The world number 13 has
beaten New Zealand teammate Joelle King in straight games in the
quarterfinals, before repeating the dose against third seeded Australian
Dianne Desira in the semis. Kitchen will face Jaclyn Hawkes in
the final, with the second seeded kiwi also winning her two matches in
straight games.
18-Aug, Women's Round One, Men's
Quarters:
Upsets Galore in Auckland
Gary Denvir reports
It has been a day of upsets at the Five Star Finance Auckland
Open at the North Shore Squash Club today.
In the men's draw, Australian Steve Finitsis continued his giant
killing run with a straight games victory in his quarterfinal against
eighth seeded compatriot Aaron Frankcomb, while seventh seeded fellow
Aussie Jason Mudge also won in three against fourth seed Wai Hang
Wong from Hong Kong.
No such drama for top seed Jonathan Kemp from England, who proved
too good for New Zealand's Kashif Shuja, beating the fifth seeded kiwi
11-5 11-4 11-6. Third seeded Australian Mike Corren was also
relatively untroubled in a straight games win over compatriot Simon
Carruthers.
In the women's draw, kiwi qualifier Joelle King surprised 7th
seeded Malaysian Delia Arnold in the opening round, edging home in a
five game thriller. Not to be outdone, Australian qualifier Peta
Hughes is also through to the quarterfinals, after beating sixth
seeded compatriot Lisa Camilleri 9-0 in the fifth. Top seed Shelley
Kitchen and second seeded fellow kiwi Jaclyn Hawkes had the
most convincing wins of the day, both taking just 24 minutes to win
through to the last eight.
17-Aug, Round One:
Lucky Escape for Kashif
Gary Denvir reports
A lucky escape for New
Zealand's Kashif Shuja in the opening round of the PSA Tour's Five Star
Finance Auckland Open at the North Shore Squash Club.
The fifth seeded kiwi has edged out Australian qualifier Scott Arnold in
a five game thriller, saving two match points in the fourth game before
finally nailing victory 11-9 in the fifth.
Second seeded Australian Tim Manning hasn't been so lucky. Manning is
the only seed to miss out on a place in the quarterfinals, after being
bundled out in four by fellow Aussie Steve Finitsis.
Meanwhile, the ladies draw is now complete after two rounds of
qualifying today. Australians Rachel Smith and Peta Hughes, New
Zealand's Joelle King and Japan's Sachiko Shinta are all through to the
opening round tomorrow.
