Sarah with Sam Fife, Marcus Sullivan, Tse-Ho Wan and Tse-Fung Yip

30-Mar-08:
Fife stops second
HK clean sweep
Andrew Dent reports

Queensland’s Sam Fife prevented a second Hong Kong clean sweep of the boys’ events at the National Junior Squash Series when he won the 15 years age group at the Sarah Fitz-Gerald Classic in Ballarat on Sunday.

Fife took out both Hong Kong finalists from the first event, beating Wan Tsz Ho in four games in the semi final and top seeded Yip Tsz Fung in the final 10-9, 9-1, 9-2.

Hong Kong players won the other three boys events, Leo Au in the 19 years, Fung Ngo Long in the 17 years and Yeung Ho Wai in the 13 years.

Zoe Petrovansky (19 years), Sarah Cardwell (17 years) and Dijo Sexton (15 years) all won their second titles following their successes in last week’s Geoff Hunt Classic.

Victorian Squash Federation executive director Paul Vear said the series had been a resounding success and vindicated the federation’s decision to conduct the event in Ballarat in preference to a Melbourne venue.

"The Ballarat Squash and Racquetball Centre will be hosting a further four squash and racquetball events this year, plus the federation is sourcing some more international options for the centre to play host to," he said.

25-Mar-08:
Clean sweep for
Hong Kong boys

Hong Kong players made a clean sweep of the boys’ events at the first tournament in the 2008 National Junior Squash Series played in Ballarat on Tuesday.

Queensland’s Jacob Alexander was the only non-Hong Kong player to make a boys’ final in the Geoff Hunt Classic – in the 19 years age group – but he found Leo Au too hot to handle and went down in straight games 9-6, 9-3, 9-2.

Other boys’ winners were Dung Long Fung (17 years), Yip Tsz Fung (15 years) and Tsz Man Ho (13 years).

In the girls’ events Queensland players won three out of four titles.

The only non-Queenslander to win was 16-year-old Sarah Cardwell, daughter of former world champion and Squash Australia Hall of Fame member Vicki Cardwell.

Cardwell beat rising New South Wales’ star Tamika Saxby 9-7, 3-9, 9-3, 9-1 in the 17 years division.

Zoe Petrovansky beat Alma Kushartanti of South Australia in the 19 years final, Dijo Sexton was too good for New Zealander Ashleigh Dunstan in the 15 years and Jessica Turnbull accounted for fellow Queenslander Lakeesha Rarere in the 13 years.

The Geoff Hunt Classic will be followed by the Sarah Fitz-Gerald Classic, which begins in Ballarat on Thursday.
