Australian Open 2006
Melbourne, 03-08 January

7-Jan:
Favourites win titles

Tournament favourites Anthony Ricketts and Rachel Grinham overcame steaming on-court temperatures to win their respective titles.

Ricketts defeated David Palmer 11/9, 11/8, 11/9 to win his second national title.

World No.2 Rachael Grinham overcame 22 year old Amelia Pittock, saying her game was more suited to the hot conditions which occurred when the air conditioning ceased to work.

" It is really exciting to win the National title for the first time."

I think Amelia played quite well today with the conditions, I think her game is more suited to a colder court and it was pretty bouncy today and I think that was on my side.

"When you get on court with these girls they have nothing to lose, so they are most likely to play at their best."

"It just got away from me suddenly and I was really struggling, but it was a good thing I got that game back because it would have been a lot easier for Amelia to come back from 1-1, rather than two-nil down."

Rachael Grinham

"It is obviously going to be a tough match with David, he's (ranked) four in the world and I'm (ranked) three so a match like that won't be easy."

"I'm happy with the way that I've started the year and am pretty happy to get through 3-0. It was really hot under the lights."

"It's a great venue, the only kind of thing the players would like to improve is the air-conditioning which I believe will be all ready to go when we come back here for the games."

6-Jan:
Top Seeds To Contest Finals.

The top seeds will contest the Australian Open finals although it was not plain sailing for Anthony Ricketts and David Palmer. In the first semi at 1 game all the third game was a tight encounter with Ricketts prevailing and going on to take the fourth against Stewart Boswell. In the other semi Dan Jenson gave Palmer a scare with a solid first game win and pushing him tight in the second before Palmer settled down.

The women's semis were more predictable although Kasey Brown gave Amelia Pittock a scare in the first game before Pittock took stock to win the next three. In the other semi Rachael Grinham demonstrated she was over her jet lag by convincingly beating Melissa Martin in three games.

5-Jan:
Semi Final Line Ups Complete.

The only upset in the seedings was Dan Jenson beating Joseph Kneipp in his quest to retain the title he won last year. David Palmer and Anthony Ricketts continued to the semi finals with demonstrations of clinical squash.

In the women's event all the seeds went safely through with only Melissa Martin dropping a game against Karen Kronemeyer.

4-Jan:
First Round Completed

Former world No.7 Craig Rowland, who delayed retirement to compete in the event, defeated top 8 seed Cameron White to set up a clash with world No. 3 Anthony Ricketts. Ricketts, who is looking to add a second Australian Open title to his collection after winning it in 2000 beat Paul Price.
Second seed David Palmer breezed past Kirby Sinclair to set up a clash with Tim Manning.

In the women's event Australia's under-19 No.1 Peta Hughes came back from 2 down to defeat Australia's No.8 Amanda Hopps. Top seeds Rachael Grinham and Amelia Pittock completed straightforward wins to progress.

Strong field for Australian Open

MOST of Australia's top-rated international squash stars will return home for the Australian Open in Melbourne starting early January.

The men's tournament will be headed by world No.3 and 2005 British Open champion Anthony Ricketts and world No.4 and former world champion David Palmer, both from New South Wales.

Queensland's Rachael Grinham, who held the world No.1 spot for 16 months until November, will be the hot favourite to grab her first Australian Open women's crown.

Her sister and world No.4 defending champ Natalie is the only major Australian star not coming to Melbourne for the tournament.

South Australia's defending champion and world No.34 Dan Jenson will be gunning for a hat-trick of Australian Open titles.

The Australian Open will be held from January 3 to 8 and will be followed directly by the world doubles championship, also in Melbourne.
