Delierre outlasts Razik
in the longest match
Ben Garner reports
There were two amazing semi-finals at the Baltimore Athletic Club,
in which both victors had to come back from a two game deficit!
Having won the first two games, Eric Galvez appeared to tire
and basically let the next two games go, hoping for one final push
in the fifth. However, he did not quite have enough energy left to
prevent defending champion Yasser El Halaby completing his
comeback with some fine squash.
Shawn Delierre won the battle between the Canadian numbers
one and two, in a long, let-filled match. It was a real war of
attrition, with both players looking to accurately move the ball
around the court as opposed to going for the outright winner, and a
high percentage of rallies ending in a decision from the referee.
Top seeded Shahier Razik took a two game lead, then had three
match balls in the fourth before Delierre eventually clinched the
victory in 2 hours 30 minutes - easily the longest match since PAR
to 11 scoring was introduced over four years ago, and probably since
PAR to 15 was introduced in 1988.
The longest recorded match in the sport took place in 1983 - in
the era of 'hand-in-hand-out' scoring - when legendary Pakistani
Jahangir Khan beat Egyptian Gamal Awad 9-10, 9-5, 9-7, 9-2 in the
166-minute Chichester Festival final in England.
Top four into semis
Ben Garner reports
The top four seeds made their way through to set up two tantalizing
semi-finals.
Shahier Razik had to work hard to get past the talented young
Englishman Joe Lee, but his greater experience and consistency
showed at the end of the games. In a similar way, while Shaun
Delierre won in three games against Reggie Schonborn he was
pushed all the way, including a 30 minute first game! With Razik and
Delierre winning, the top half will see a battle between the no.1
and 2 ranked players in Canada.
Yasser El Halaby will not be popular in the Salazar family,
dispatching Arturo today having beaten the other twin, Cesar,
yesterday! The defending champion will face the no.2 seed Eric
Galvez for a place in the final, with Galvez pulling away to win
the third after two close games against Bernardo Samper.
Joe jumps into Baltimore quarters
Ben Garner reports
Most of the seeds progressed safely into the quarter-finals of the
Baltimore Cup, with the only upset being Joe Lee’s defeat of
number eight seed Patrick Chifunda in four tough games.
However, defending champion Yasser El Halaby had a major
scare when he was 1-0 and 10-5 down in the second to Cesar Salazar.
Salazar was not able to convert any of these opportunities though
and the no.3 seed came back to win in four games.
Tomorrow Cesar’s twin brother Arturo will be looking to get
revenge for the Salazar family!
