30-Nov, Final:
Galvez takes BC title

Shahier Razik of Toronto lost to Eric Galvez of Mexico on Sunday in the championship final at the $15,000 B.C., Open men’s professional squash tournament held this week at the Sport Central Fitness Club.

The final pitted the top-two seeded players and the number-two Galvez took the match 3-0. Both players were coming off hard fought semifinals on Saturday. Razik was competing in his third pro final this year and looking for a second victory.

"He simply had more in the tank than I did today," said Razik, who did not play on the pro tour most of the summer due to a leg injury. "The semi took a lot more out of me than I expected and I just couldn’t keep up. Still it was my best tournament since September but I would have really liked to win at home."

The victory marks Galvez's ninth career title.

29-Nov, Semis:

Top two reach BC final

Top-seed Shahier Razik of Toronto discarded pesky Arturo Salazar of Mexico on Saturday night to advance to the championship final at the $15,000 B.C., Open men’s professional squash tournament.

Razik, Canada’s top internationally ranked player at number-22, won the hard-fought match 11-8, 11-8, 11-13, 11-9 in a lengthy 80 minutes. Salazar, seeded seventh, was coming off an upset straight games quarterfinal victory over third-seed Shawn DeLierre of Brossard, Que., on Friday,

"It was a tough match but things were going as expected being up 2-0,’’ said Razik. ‘’ I was disappointed to not close it in the third. He got tired in the fourth and I was able to capitalize on that."

Razik faces second seed Eric Galvez of Mexico in Sunday’s final. In the other semi, Galvez also had his hands full edging number-six Chris Simpson of England in an 88 minute marathon.

Razik reaches BC semis

Shahier Razik of Toronto easily advanced to the semifinals on Friday night at the B.C., Open men’s squash tournament.

The competition is an event on the Canadian Squash Circuit for the 2008-09 season as well as a stop on the men’s pro circuit.

Razik, the top-seed and ranked 22nd in the world, defeated Cesar Salazar of Mexico in straight games. Salazar had upset eighth-seed Robin Clarke of Ottawa in the opening round on Thursday.

‘’It was a good match and it’s great to get it done in three,’’ said Razik. ‘’I’m expecting it to get much tougher from here on in.’’

Razik faces Salazar’s brother Arturo who is seeded seventh in one of Saturday’s semis.

Arturo upset number-three Shawn DeLierre of Brossard, Que., 11-6, 11-7, 11-1 in 23 minutes on Friday. If DeLierre would have won, it would have set up a rematch against Razik. Two weeks ago DeLierre surprised Razik in a match that went five games and lasted 150 minutes in one of the longest matches ever in professional squash.

Sixth-seed Chris Simpson of England defeated Jens Schoor of Germany 11-5, 11-4, 11-7. The unseeded Schoor had eliminated fourth-seed Ryan Cuskelly of Australia in the first round Thursday.

In the other quarterfinal, number-two Eric Galvez of Mexico eliminated John Rooney of Ireland in straight games.

27-Nov, Round One:
Schoor makes it into
Richmond quarters

A solid performance by unseeded Jens Schoor took the 21-year-old German into the quarter-finals of the BC Open after he upset fourth seed Ryan Cuskelly in the opening round of the inaugural event at Sport Central in Richmond, Canada.

Schoor survived a 40-minute fourth game to beat the higher-ranked Australian in 86 minutes to earn a last eight clash with England's sixth seed Chris Simpson.

English qualifier Jaymie Haycocks was unable to exploit a 9/7 lead in the decider lead against Shawn Delierre as the third seed from Canada fought back to win in five.

A stomach flu the day before his match took its toll on South Africa's fifth seed Jesse Engelbrecht, who withdrew after his first game against unseeded Irishman John Rooney.

Top seed Shahier Razik, the top-ranked Canadian, was in commanding form against local player Justin Todd. The 31-year-old from Toronto now faces Mexican qualifier Cesar Salazar - who is also joined in the last eight by his twin brother Arturo.
