Belgrade
Trophy 2006
30-Aug to 01-Sep |
02-Sep-06:
Leifels
takes Belgrade Trophy
Ivan Djordjevic reports from Serbia
Thursday
The weather got much better so all the necessary organization was
prepared for the women's exhibition match in the evening. After this
match we have played the doubles. It was really a good event because
some of the spectators have never even thought that something like
this exists.
Friday
Finally we have got really a good weather and we were able to assure
good semis. In one semi final I have played against Petros
Tzamalukas and I was able to win 3:0. The second semi was
between Gasper Fecur and Stefan Leifels where Stefan
won also 3:0.
In the evening we had two more matches and the main square of
Serbian capital Belgrade was packed! Match for the third place
Petros Tzamalukas won 3:0. Petros played much better than in semis
and Gasper seem to be tired. Both players gave everything, but
Petros made less mistakes.

Stefan was a big favourite for the final match, but I was very
motivated after beating Petros in the semis. I enjoyed the match,
gave everything and the support from the crowd was fantastic. Stefan
is more used to this high pace of squash and he was controlling the
match. In the end he won 3/1 and become the winner of 4th Belgrade
Trophy. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I would like to thank all the players for coming and for their
support. We wanted to do some promotion for squash and we gave our
best. People could see some great games, the square was full, so we
are happy.
All credits to Mr. Darko Glavas, the technical director of
the tournament, because he done a great job and without him this
event would not be possible.

31-Aug-06:
Court goes up in Belgrade
Ivan Djordjevic reports from Serbia
We have been very unlucky with the weather here in Belgrade, because
it's raining ...
The Glass Court arrived on Monday and we found out that one piece
had been broken on the way, but Rusty Koys (European Individual
Championship promoter)
had a reserve, so that was fine.
We had to close the main street of the Serbian capital at 4 p.m. to
download the container with Glass Court spares and the traffic was
very, very bad. None of us got arrested though, so all was well!
Rusty, his workers and our helpers have been working hard to put the
Glass Court up, as it was raining all the time, so RESPECT!!!
Now the court is ready, the rain has stopped (for a while), so the
tournament goes on!

29-Aug-06:
Champions head for Belgrade
Ivan Djordjevic reports from Serbia
The Serbian Squash Association is proud to be organising a big
squash tournament ... "BELGRADE TROPHY 2006".
This is an invitation tournament and we have invited 8 national
champions and 24 locals. The tournament will start in
“SQUASHLAND” and after first two rounds the tournament will continue
on the Belgrade main square.
Square
“Nikola Pasic” is next to the Serbian parliament and the top
8 will play on the Glass Court. The Glass Court will be build in the
middle of this square and we expect many spectators.
The Serbian Squash Association was founded in 2001, so this
tournament is big promotion for squash in our country and also the
whole Balkan area!
Our main goal are the juniors, so they will have the possibility to
play with the top players and learn more about squash.
During this event we will also have a women's exhibition match
between Austrian No. 1 Pamela Pancis and Slovenian No. 1
Petra Vihar.
Next to the Glass Court we will have big video screen where we will
show some great matches with the world's best players.
The tournament will be opened by Michael Khan, the President
of the Austrian Squash Association and Cedomir Vitorovic, the
President of Serbian Squash Association. This event will be
supported by all important Serbian TV stations and other media.
Nowadays we have three squash clubs in Serbia and a lot of active
players. This event is just a start for us, as we are looking
forward to organising some WISPA and PSA tournaments in the near
future.
German No. 1 Stefan Liefels is top seed for the Belgrade
Trophy, followed by national champions from Austria,
Greece, Serbia and Slovenia.
As all the top players are in Egypt for the Worlds, it is a big
shame that we couldn’t invite any of them, but we will make a big
promotion for the World Open 2006 and hope to see some of them in
Belgrade soon.
We hope that you like our idea and will support it!
