Another hectic
schedule today, but by close of play we'll
know the quarter-finalists in each of the
eight events.
First up is the B15 and B13, eight matches
each at Abbeydale and Hallamshire
respectively from 9.00, the U17s and U19st
take over in the middle of the day,
finishing off with the younger age groups'
last sixteens from 16.00.
As ever, we'll do what we can ... stay tuned
!
Boys 15 & Boys 13
No dramas in the first set of eight matches
at Abbeydale, and no-one detained for more
than four games ... same story at Abbeydale,
all seeds through with as minimum of fuss.
In the second batch of U15s Malaysia's
Nicholas Chun took five games to oust 9/16
seed Adam Turner ...
Girls U19 - Tamika tames el
Torky
The first batch of girls U19 matches
produced two spectacular matches and on
upset.
Top seed Amanda Sobhy breezed past
Menat Allah Nasser in straight games, but
the all-French battle and the Tamika Saxby v
Nouran El Torky matches both went the
distance.
 No
doubt they're friends off court, but there
looked to be no love lost between
Cyrielle Peltier and Julia Lecoq in a
pretty serious encounter on court eight.
Lecoq squandered multiple game balls before
taking the first, but Peltier, seeded 9/16,
came from behind in the fourth and fifth to
complete a 13/15, 11/7, 9/11, 12/10, 13/11
win, saving two match balls in the decider.
It was a terrible way to finish for Lecoq,
as Peltier, serving at 12/11, dived into the
back corner, just about got the ball back to
the front wall before Lecoq plopped an easy
ball into the tin with her opponent still
getting to her feet. Ouch!
 On
the showcourt Australia's Tamika Saxby
produced the upset of the tournament so far,
beating Egypt's 3/4 seed Nouran El Torky in
a see-saw five game match. They took it in
turns to take early leads in each game, but
it was Saxby who started and finished it,
winning 11/8, 3/11, 11/8, 6/11, 11/7 in 48
minutes.
"That's one of my best wins for sure," said
a delighted Tamika. "I'd targeted the top
eight this year, so I'm pretty happy so far.
I'd played Nouran before so I knew what to
expect, you just have to have confidence in
yourself to be able to deal with her game."
Another
dramatic finish followed as Farah Abdel
Meguid, seeded 5/8, overcame fellow
Egyptian Salma Hany, last year's
finalist who was seeded 9/16 this time
around.
After sharing the first four games, Meguid
edged ahead in the decider, and a no let
decision at 10/9 lest Hany distraught as
Meguid marched out of court and into the
quarter-finals, 8/11, 12/10, 11/8, 5/11,
11/9.
Girls U15, Beecroft flies

 Over
at Concord (we'll try to pay a visit there
tomorrow!) another Egyptian 3/4 seed fell as
Northumbria's Lucy Beecroft downed
Salma El Dafrawy 3/1. Beecroft, the recently
crowned British U15 champion, now meets
fellow 9/16 seed Nouran Gohar for a
place in the semi-finals.
"That was a good win for me," beamed
Beecroft, "you know it's always going to be
tough against an Egyptian. I know I play
another 9/16 seed tomorrow but she must be
pretty good to beat Nele Gilis as easily as
she did. If I win tomorrow it will be an
even bigger bonus than today!"
Boys U19, Egypt
take five of eight
 With
matches running well behind schedule at
Abbydale, the senior boys are on court. Top
seed Amr Khaled Khalifa wasted no
time in despatching Tom de Mulder in 18
minutes, while U17 champion Marwan El
Shorbagy also won in straight games
against Nick Hopcroft.
Two English successes though as Nathan
Lake beat Robbie Downer in a weird
12/10, 11/2, 12/10 scoreline. Declan
James pulled off a notable upset with an
impressive 11/5, 11/6, 11/4 win over 5/8
seed Aditja Jagtap.
Zahed Sherian restored momentum for
Egypt by beating birthday boy James Earles
13/11 in the fifth, and second seed Ali
Farag made sure that Egypt have at least
half the quarter-finalists as he beat Rick
Penders 3/0 on a packed court six.
England's top hope Charles Sharpes
was seen kicking his heels as he waited for
his match against Karim Ali Fathy on
a disastrously late court two.
Once they got on, it wasn't too long before
they had to change courts due to a
condensation problem on the walls, with
Fathy running out the 3/1 winner which was,
by all accounts, an excellent match, Fathy
winning 7/11, 13/11, 11/9, 11/9 in 89
minutes.
