Alana Miller of Winnipeg
stunned top seed Runa Reta of Ottawa in the women’s final of the
Canadian National Championships in Calgary, while as expected,
Shahier Razik of Toronto successfully defended his men’s title
with a straight games victory over Matthew Giuffre of Edmonton.
In the women’s final, Miller earned her first title since 2004.
"This was the best squash I’ve ever played," said Miller, the
second-seed. "I felt great. Everything went according to plan. I was
able to put the ball exactly where I wanted to particularly on the
front wall and the deep corners. I just kept focused throughout the
whole match. I knew she had the ability to comeback."
Miller also won the 2005 Pan Am title, but victories had been far
and few between since.
"This means so much to me," said Miller, who heads to Dallas next
week for the Texas Open, a Silver event on the WISPA World Tour.
"I’m really working on becoming a more consistent player and
bringing my game up a whole new level."
In the men’s final, Razik said he needed his best match of the
tournament to beat Giuffre.
"I was steadier than Matthew and I capitalised on his errors," said
Razik, ranked 25th in the world. "I had been struggling all week
with the court and the altitude. Today was the first day I felt
pretty smooth out there."
Giuffre was the second-seed, appearing in his first Nationals final.
