22-May, Final:

[4] Orla Noom (Ned) bt [7] Margriet Huisman (Ned)
        9/1, 9/1, 9/0 (25m)

First Title for Orla
John Catlow reports from Carcassonne

The party's over, Orla has won her first WISPA title, and there's only the washing up to do before getting back to work tomorrow.

Tonight was good fun with the girls still around in Carcassone mixing in with the members after the final (except poor Joshna who's been ill this weekend and only stayed the time to mark the final before returning to her bed)

Louise - referee for the final - is made of sterner stuff and despite finishing the match with a "stroke" stayed around to chat with the finalists and the members long after her ultimate decision.

Tricia missed the final - she was visiting "the city" for the fourteenth time since she got here - but arrived in time for the "troisième mi-temps" (en français dans le texte). I mustn't forget that I'm picking her up at 8h00 tomorrow morning - this morning - to take her to the airport.

As usual they've all said that it's been a great tournament and they'll all be back next year. In fact, most of them do come back and often if they don't it's because our little tournament does not offer enough points for the WISPA rankings for it to be sensible to come back.

Becky Botwright (N°26) came back hoping to win a tournament that I think she appreciates but it wasn't to be. So in fact I hope I don't see Orla next year ..... unless we find a lot more money! (although she promised and swore that she'll be back)

Double Dutch
in Carcassonne

John Catlow reports

It will be a double Dutch final in Carcassonne, after Margriet Huisman and Orla Noom both won their semi-finals by 3/1 scorelines.

Tricia Chuah had looked very strong in her first two matches and the first game of her semi-final with Margriet confirmed this idea as she stormed home 9/0 in less than five minutes. In the second she still seemed to be in control but Margriet was now retreiving everything that Tricia threw at her and Tricia started making errors.

Slowly but surely the match was turning Margriet's way as she took the second 9/7. The third game was the hub of the match and when Margriet took three straight points to take it 9/7 Tricia's confidence took a dip and the fourth game never looked like going Tricia's way against a fast moving Dutch girl who raced home 9/3.

The no nonsense Orla Noom started her match with Georgina Stoker in the same fashion that she had won her first two rounds. Attacking Georgina's poor length and keeping the English girl under constant pressure she raced into a 2/0 lead, but Georgina had not had her last say and as she slow the game down Orla started making errors.

The loss of the third game 9/7 did not stop the Dutch girl finishing off the job however, as she ran out winner, 9/6 in the fourth.

Hi Framboise,

Just a quick message from gorgeous Carcassonne.

Been having a great time here! John has once again done a great job on organising the tournament, all the families we're staying with are dead nice and of course Carcassonne itself is a lovely little town to spend time.

Finals-day today! and it's going to be an all-dutch one, yey!!!

I'm happy I got through in this tournament of upsets! Hopefully myself and Margriet can give the people here a good match tonight!

Right, we're off into town for some lunch ... once again a massive thank you to john for putting up this great tournament.

Take care,
Orla

20 May 2006 - Quarters:

Stoker shocks
top seed Botwright
John Catlow reports from Carcassone

Two very one sided quarters and two enormous battles in this evening's play.

Susannah King played well to win this morning but was outclassed this evening by Tricia Chuah. After losing the first game 9/1, Susannah seemed to have taken things into her hands when she led 8/1 in the second, but she only won 5 more rallies with Tricia running out winner 9/1 10/8 9/1.

Louise Crome started favourite in the second quarter and she seemed to confirm this by winning the first game 9/4 after 20 minutes. But Margriet Huisman kept the tempo going in the second and took it by the same score. At 7-all in the third two important points won consecutively by Louise gave her the game. The two girls fought heroically in the fourth and with Louise 7/4 ahead things looked difficult for Margriet. But 10 minutes later she took the fourth 10/9. Amazingly after an hour's play the girls were still moving well at the start of the fifth but the tiredness finally crept into Louise's game and some unforced errors saw Margriet run out 9/4 to win her place in tomorrow's first semi-final with Tricia. An impressive performance.

The third quarter was dominated by Orla Noom who left little space for the young Indian Joshna Chinappa to express herself. A little under the weather, Joshna was no match for a no-nonsense Orla.

The fourth all-England quarter was a strange match. Becky Botwright seemed likely to win comfortably when she led 6/1 in the first but it was Georgina Stoker who took the lead 9/6 and continued in the second to lead 6/1 herself after some poor play by Becky. At 6/6 things seemed to be levelling out but Georgina took the second as well and seemed home and dry when she led 5/0 in the third. And then came the blank. Botwright takes the third 9/5, dominates the fourth 9/3, and leads 4/0 in the fifth ... which Stoker takes 9/4.

Hi Framboise

Its Joshna from india... Here in Carcassonne for the first time...

The one thing I really liked when I came here was that the place is so similar to where I come from in India.... small town, not too many people, greenery all around, lovely weather and a very quiet place!!!

I still haven't got a chance to look around in Carcassone, hopefully I will in a day or so, looking forward to that.

The people here are very friendly and nice. John here is absolutely great and doing a wonderful job at the tournament..

Hopefully I will be back here again next year.. so till then...take care ...

Joshna Chinappa
Hi Fram,

It's Becky Bot here, everything is going smoothly here in Carcassonne, the first round matches finished this morning with no major mishaps, the only seed to lose was Celia I'm afraid, leaving no other French in the draw, and the quarters are commencing now.

"No match this morning was particularly easy, all the girls were fighting fit. I was particularly nervous this morning as I'd never played Emma my opponent, which always makes you feel a little in the dark, but eventually won.

"Carcassonne is a lovely place, with great weather and surroundings and nice people, what more could you ask for?

"Well I'm off to warm up now ..."

Take care
