#1 Chris Simpson
Chris is the tenth-ranked player in
this year's draw - quite something when you think that he won
last year's event, the CLIC Sargent Classic. Then again, the
four-fold increase in prize money has a lot to do with the
quality of the entries ...
Last
year's victory was Chris's 9th and biggest PSA title.
Since then he's gone on to get married (congrats!), reach the
semi-finals of the British Nationals in February, helped England
regain the European Team title, won the $25k Open de Paris in
May, helped Paderborn win the European Club Champs title, and
this weekend he reached the semi-finals of the $50k CCI
International in Mumbai.
So he'll be returning to St George's in good form, which he'll
need to be as he's facing third seed Marwan Elshorbagy in the
opening match on Friday 9th Dec, and it's tywo-all with Chris
winning the first two, Marwan the most recent two.
Chris faced elder brother Mohamed last month in the U.S. Open,
so maybe meeting Marwan is a blessing in disguise.
"I'm really looking forward to going back to St George's," said
Chris, "I played well in last year's event and saved my best
squash for the final, so I hope I can resume in that sort of
form.
"It's great to have a big event like this near home, Danny has
done really well to grow the event, and the fact that the
proceeds from the tickets go to such a deserving charity is a
big bonus."
