Canadians win 4 of 8 draws at 2008 Canadian Junior Open

NIAGARA ON THE LAKE - Squash Canada crowned eight champions on Tuesday December 16th as the 2008 Canadian Junior Squash Open wrapped up in Niagara on the Lake Ontario at White Oaks Resort and Spa. All draws featured Canadians in the finals with four Canadian victories resulting. The results are as follows:

Girls Results:

• U13 - The second seed Maria Fernada Rivera Vazquez of Mexico defeating the top seed Alyssa Mehta from Ontario.

• U15 - The top seed prevailed as Canadian National Junior Squad member Michelle Gemmell of Ontario defeated the fourth seed Lorena itzel Pana of Mexico.

• U17 – This final was an all Canadian match up as the top seed Alix Younger of Manitoba defeated the second seed Danielle Letourneau of Alberta. Both are Canadian National Junior Squad members.

• U19 – This draw featured two of Canada's top juniors as the top Laura Gemmell of Ontario, a Canadian National Senior Squad member, defeated the second seed and National Espoir squad member Samantha Cornett also of Ontario. In the 3rd/4th playoff Catalina Pelaez of Colombia defeated Kerrie Sample of England.

Boys Results:

• U13 - Top seed Michael Thompson of BC was defeated by the sixth seed Jordan Brail of the USA.

• U15 - There were no surprises in this draw as National Junior Squad member and top seed Joshua Sekhar of Ontario defeated second seed Zachary Leman of BC.

• U17 – This draw featured five National Junior Squad members, the second seed Emanuelle Miled Zarazua of Mexico defeated the top seed and home town favourite Nick Sachvie of Ontario in the finals.

• U19 - In a surprising turn of events both the top and second seeds were knocked out in the semi finals of the U19 category, paving the way for fourth seed Anthony Graham of England to defeat the third seed Brian Hong of Ontario. In the 3rd/4th playoff second seed Andrew Schnell of Alberta defeated top seed Arjun Gupta of Ontario.
