Jonathan Kemp"The tournament was good, we were all looked after very well. There was a packed crowd for the final, several hundred people, which made for a great atmosphere.

The match was played at a pretty fast pace, with both of us going for a lot of shots. Then, after the second, he started to tire and I was able to win the last two fairly comfortably."

Kemp claims Karachi Title

England’s Jonathan Kemp overpowered Pakistan’s Amjad Khan in just 22 minutes in the final to win the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) International at the Roshan Khan-Jahangir Khan Complex in Karachi.

Amjad, the nephew of former squash legend Jansher Khan who is making a comeback after being out of the game with a series of injuries, never got into the match as 24-year old Kemp dominated from the start, playing some marvellous cross-court and drop shots to overcome the challenge of the qualifier.

Amjad said that despite losing the final he was quite satisfied with his performance.

Kemp, the fourth seed who is enjoying a best-ever world ranking of 33, collected $3971 as he picked up his second PSA title within a month and the third of his career.

Good day for the underdogs

It was a good day for the underdog in Karachi, as both CNS International semi-finals were won by the lower-seeded player.

Jonathan Kemp recorded a surprisingly easy victory over  compatriot Mark Heather in just 17 minutes, while qualifier Amjad Khan continued his spectacular run as he recovered from a game down to beat fellow-Pakistani Arshad Iqbal Burki.

Former Pakistan Open champion Amjad is fighting his way back to full fitness after a series of injuries thwarted his international career three years ago. The 25-year-old from Peshawar last appeared in a PSA final in October 2000, when he beat fellow countryman Mansoor Zaman to lift a Pakistan Circuit title, also in Karachi.
"After beating Shamsul Islam, I got rhythm and improved my form."

13-Nov, Quarters:
England v Pakistan in Karachi

Jonathan KempRather appropriately, with the first cricket test under way in Pakistan, the final of the CNS International in Karachi is guaranteed to be an England v Pakistan affair.

Arshad Iqbal BurkiEngland's top seed Mark Heather will meet compatriot Jonathan Kemp in the semi-finals after they cruised to straight-games victories over Basit Ashfaq and Hisham Mohd Ashour, respectively, while in the bottom half of the draw Amjad Khan and Arshad Iqbal Burki emerged triumphant from two all-Pakistan quarter-finals.

Qualifier Amjad, the former Pakistan Open champion who is making a comeback after a series of injuries looked to have put paid to his career three years ago, defeated Asian junior champion Aamir Atlas Khan while Burki followed up his first round defeat of second seed Mansoor Zaman by beating another seed, Khayal Muhammed Khan.

12-Nov, Round One:
Seeds Scattered in Karachi

The CNS International got off to a sensational start in Karachi when three of the top four seeds, all home players, fell in the first round.

Arshad Iqbal BurkiZaman cousins Shahid and Mansoor were the top seeds, but both faltered after winning the first game against Mark Heather and Arshad Iqbal Burki, respectively.

Fourth seed Shamsul Islam Khan also fell, losing out in five games to Amjad Khan, the former Pakistan champion and the only Pakistani to have won the CNS event.

The top remaining seed is England's Jonathan Kemp, who meets Egypt's Hisham Mohd Ashour in the quarter-finals.

Pakistan is still guaranteed a finalist, with four home players contesting the quarters in the bottom-half of the draw.

CNS Under Way In Karachi
From the Daily Times:

KARACHI: The main round of 6th Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) International Squash Championship explodes into action at Roshan Khan-Jahangir Khan Squash Complex on Saturday (today) with just three foreigners in fray.

Last year’s runner-up Shahid Zaman takes on Mark Heather of England in the opening round of $25,000 competition while second seed Mansoor Zaman will face Arshad Iqbal Burki. Third seed England’s Jonathan Kemp will be up against Safeerullah of Pakistan and fourth seed Shams-ul-Islam Khan of Pakistan will meet former champion and qualifier Amjad Khan. A former Pakistan Open Champion, Amjad is returning to active squash after nearly two years due to serious knee injury.

After conclusion of the two-day qualifying round, Amjad, Farhan Mahboob, Khawaja Adil Maqbool and Khalid Atlas Khan completed the draw of 16.
