COAS TITLE FOR SHAHID
After a difficult start where Shahid Zaman
tried to be patient and play some length, he came back to his natural
game, went to shorts and nicks to beat Joey Barrington in 4 games
and 44 minutes.
"Joey relied on basics at the outset of the tournament, resulting in his
victory in the first game," a jubilant Shahid told Dawn after the final.
"But I concentrated on my strokes with an aggressive approach from then on
to snuff out his challenge," added Shahid. "I look forward to
$120,000 Bermuda Open in which the leading players of the world will
compete. That tournament will be crucial in my ambition to become the
world champion."
"Joey was playing Shahid tight balls in the corners in the first game,"
said national coach Jamshed Gul. "I asked Shahid to change his tactics and
play his shots more aggressively nearer to the wall," Jamshed said. "The
Englishman had no answer to Shahid's aggresive approach."
"He was too quick on his feet and managed to pick even the best of my
shots," said Barrington. "I do not think there was any big difference
except that he got breaks and that too at crucial stage."
Unlike previous days, the final was witnessed by a good number of people
who backed Shahid all the way. "Definitely he also cashed in on the
advantage of the home crowd," the Englishman said.

England's
Joey Barrington will face home favourite Shahid Zaman in
today's COAS final in Islamabad, after contrasting semi-final
victories.
Mansoor Zaman
didn't offer much resistance to a strong Barrington , and
bowed out in 3 "easy" games, according to our sources...
The other semi-final was another difficult match between Adrian Grant and Shahid
Zaman (Framboise witnessed one while in Islamabad), as Shahid has
sometimes a tendency not to clear the ball quick enough, with Shahid
again winning, 11/5 in the 5th.
02-Mar, Quarters
Mansoor and Shahid
in CAOS semis ...

The Zaman cousins Mansoor and Shahid reached the
semi-finals of the COAS International in Islamabad, on a day which saw
all four quarter-finals go to five games.
Shahid came from 2-1 down against Alex Stait, winning the final two
games on tie-breaks, and now faces England's top seed Adrian Grant,
who also found himself 2-1 down, against teenage sensation Aamir Atlas
Khan, before clinchinh his semi-final place.
England's Joey
Barrington secured the only upset when he fought back from 1/2
down against second-seeded Malaysian Mohd Azlan Iskandar and finally
prevailed in a tense tie-break in the decider in Islamabad.
Joey had earlier survived a five-game battle with Pakistan's Saeed
Hassan in the first round. After taking the opener against Azlan,
ranked 17 in the world, Barrington fell two behind - but maintained
his focus to fight back to claim his significant 11-9 6-11 9-11 11-3
11-10 victory.
Somerset-based Barrington will now meet Pakistan's No4 seed Mansoor
Zaman, who survived a close encounter with compatriot Shamsul Islam
Khan 10-11 11-10 10-11 11-7 11-6.
01-Mar, Round One:
50/50 for Pakistanis in CAOS
Four Pakistanis won through to the quarter-finals of the COAS
International as the Mushaf squash complex in Islamabad.
The third and fourth seeded Zaman cousins, Shahid and Mansoor,
both beat local qualifiers, while Aamir Atlas Khan and
Shamsul Islam Khan both scored upset victories to advance.
Aamir, the 14-year-old nephew of the legendary Jansher Khan, won the Asian junior title in Chennai in January
and here won a
see-saw battle with Egypt's third seed Mohammed Essam Hafiz,
eventually winning in a fifth-game tie-breaker after saving a match
ball.
Aamir now faces England's top seed Adrian Grant while Shamsul
meets Mansoor.
A further two Englishmen feature in the quarters - Alex Stait
came from two-down to beat seventh seed Majid Khan to set up a clash
with Shahid, while Joey Barrington squandered a 2-0 lead before
beating Saeed Hassan in five, and now meets second seed Azlan
Iskandar.
