Crocodile Challenge Cup 2008
Hong Kong, 18-22 Jun, $12k+$6k

22-Jun, Finals:

[1] Kasey Brown (Aus) bt [2] Rebecca Chiu (Hkg)                                9/3, 9/2, 9/7 (45m)
[7] Abdullah Almezayen (Kuw) bt [1] Dick Lau (Hkg)                     11/8, 11/9, 11/7 (36m)

Kasey & Abdullah deny HK double

Australia's Kasey Brown denied home favourite Rebecca Chiu a fourth-consecutive Crocodile Cup title when the top seed beat the defending champion in straight games at the Hong Kong Squash Centre.

The victory marks Brown's 9th WISPA title, coming just a week after the 22-year-old world number 13 captured the Australian National title for the third successive year.

There was further disappointment for the home fans when top seed Dick Lau finished in second spot - as he did last year - after a straight-games loss to the tournament's surprise package, Kuwait's Abdullah Almezayen.

Having already beaten the third and second seeds in the previous two rounds, the 20-year-old went one better in the final to claim his first PSA title.

21-Jun, Semis:
HK top two on course ...

Hong Kong's top players Rebecca Chiu and Dick Lau maintained hopes of a first-ever home double in the Crocodile Cup.

Chiu eased past Annie Au in under half an hour, a contrast to the pair's last few meetings where although Chiu won she was take all the way. The three-time champion now meets top seed Kasey Brown in the final after the Aussie had an equally-impressive semi-final win over Donna Urquhart.

In the men's event the all-HK semi was a similar story to the women's, with the more experienced Lau - runner-up last year - beating young challenger in Max Lee in four games in just short of an hour..

He'll face another youngster in the final after Kuwait's Abdullah Almezayen overcame second seed Steve Finitsis in a five-game thriller.

It's HK v Australia for sure ...

An Australia v Hong Kong final is guaranteed in the women's draw of the Crocodile Cup after today's quarter-finals.

Top seed Kasey Brown eased past young Joey Chan while Donna Urquhart set up an all-Australian semi as she upset third seeded Christina Mak.

A bigger upset followed in the bottom half as Asian Junior Champion Annie Au beat fourth seed Joshna Chinappa in straight games to set up a meeting with defending champion Rebecca Chiu, who received a walkover into the last four.

In the men's event Kuwait's Abdullah Almezayen created the only upset of the day as he defeated third seed Matthew Karwalski. He now meets another Australian in second seed Steve Finitsis while the other semi-final is an all-HK affair between Dick Lau and Max Lee.

19-Jun, Round One:
Nishio knocks out Ng
in Hong Kong upset

Unseeded Mami Nishio, the sole competitor from Japan, produced the only women's upset in the Crocodile Challenge Cup when she beat sixth seed Elise Ng in the first round of the $12k event at the Hong Kong Squash Centre in Hong Kong.

Nishio, at 34 the oldest player in the draw, despatched local hopeful Ng in straight games and will now face second seed Rebecca Chiu, also from Hong Kong, for a place in the semi-finals.

There was unexpected Hong Kong success in the men's Super Satellite PSA Tour event when qualifier Roger Ngan beat England's No8 seed Eddie Charlton.

Tom Pashley became a further English seed casualty when he was forced to retire injured after just one game against Bader Al Hussaini. The 24-year-old unseeded Kuwaiti will now face Hong Kong's Max Lee, the fourth seed, in the quarter-finals.
