Hat-trick for Chiu as
Corren squeezes home
Rebecca Chiu delighted the home fans at the Hong Kong squash
centre as she collected her third successive Crocodile Cup victory,
beating Malaysia's Sharon Wee in four games in the final.
The victory marks 28-year-old Chiu's 13th career title and her fifth in
2007.
In
the men's final Australian top seed Mike Corren maintained his
record of winning the close games ("I still think about 15-scoring where
the game didn't really start until 10-all!") as he edged out Hong Kong
national champion Dick Lau in a nail-biting three game encounter.
Corren, 33, is making a comeback after serious injury put his career on
hold, claimed his 15th career PSA title to go with a clutch of
challenger titles he has collected this year in New Zealand, as well as
the Australain National title he claimed in July.

15-Sep, Semis:
HK
make both finals
Hosts Hong Kong will be represented in both finals, as defending
champion Rebecca Chiu came through in straight games against Peta
Hughes, and Dick Lau staged a remarkable recovery from 2-0 down
to beat HK number one Wai Hang Wong.
Lau will meet top seed Mike Corren in the final, the Australian
winning a tight four-game match against Kamran Khan.
Malaysia's Sharon Wee denied hopes of an all-HK women's final
when she beat Christina Mak 3/1 in the final match of the day. |
14-Sep, Quarters:
Top
three in men's quarters
Top seed Mike Corren came through to
the semi-finals with a straight-games win over qualifier Choong Kam Hing
(taking two 'tie-break' games, as is his wont) and will meet another
Malaysian, Kamran Khan, for a place in the final after Khan
outsed yesterday's giant-killer Roger Ngan.
The other semi-final will be an all-HK affair between the reigning
national champion Dick Lau and national number one Wai Hang
Wong, seeded three and two for this event.
It's a similar story in the women's event, where the top four seeds all
won their quarter-finals. Hong Kong's Rebecca Chiu and
Christina Mak both won in straight games and Chiu, the defending
champion, will meet Australia's Peta Hughes for a place in the
final while Mak faces second seed Sharon Wee, who needed the full
five games to overcome KH junior Annie Au.

13-Sep, Round One:
Chiu Chases Fifth Title Of The Year
Rebecca Chiu made a confident start in her
bid to win a fifth WISPA title of the
year - and the second on home soil - when she dismissed Malaysian
qualifier Siti Munirah Jusoh in straight games in the first round
of the Crocodile Squash Challenge Cup in Hong Kong.
The
former Asian Games champion's 9-3, 9-1, 9-1 win takes her into a
quarter-finals clash with compatriot Elise Ng, who beat Japan's
Sachiko Shinta 9-5, 9-6, 9-2.
There
will be Hong Kong interest in two of the other three quarter-finals of
the WISPA Tour 10 event after No3 seed Christina Mak beat South
Korean qualifier Sun-Mi Song 9-6, 9-6, 9-4 and eighth seed
Annie Au battled to a 9-6, 5-9, 9-5, 9-5 victory over Australian
Lisa Camilleri.
There
were upsets aplenty in the men's Satellite event: Local star Roger
Ngan produced the biggest shock by defeating third-seeded Malaysian
Nafzahizam Adnan 12-10, 1-11, 12-10,
11-9 in 50 minutes.
Malaysia's No5 seed Elvinn Keo also made an early exit - beaten
11-7, 13-11, 10-12,
9-11, 11-6 by unseeded compatriot Muhammad Azfar Azan.
