Top two make Czech final
Tomas Forter reports
The first semi-final between Daryl Selby and Mark Krajcsak was
very close all the way. From 5/5 in the first Daryl managed to get
ahead and took the lead.
In the second he was 9/5 and 10/7 up but Mark saved three game
balls and forced the tie break where he saved one more before
Daryl converted his fifth chance.
The third was close again, with Daryl saving three game balls
before clinching it 13/11.
"It
was a very hard match. All three games were very close, there
wasn't much in it. I was just able to win those crucial points at
the ends of the games. I enjoyed the match, it was very fair as
well.
Daryl Selby |
"I
played well. I just needed to win the second game because I knew
that to come back from 0/2 down would be very difficult. This was
my last tournament of the season so I would like to thank my
girlfriend and my coaches for their support during the season.
"I enjoyed the tournament. I always like to come to Prague and I
like to play on the glass court. The tournament was well
organized, the court was good, the crowds were good. I am happy
with my wins against Luca and Jan.
"Now I am going to take a break then work very hard during the
summer and I hope to start the next season stronger."

In the second match Julian
Illingworth started very well and was able to keep the lead
throughout the first, taking it 11/4. The second started in the
opposite way, with Tony taking a 6/1 lead.
He was able to get to 10/6 but after six unanswered points Julian
won the second 12/10 to double his lead. In the third Julian
started well again. He got to 7/2, Tony managed to get back to 7/7
but he was very tired from his previous matches so Julian just
kept pushing and won 11/8.
"It
was a good match. The court took the ball well in the front so we
both played a lot of shots. The second game was crucial. When I
realized I was hurting him with my dropshots I tried to hold my
shots and then pass him to the back to make him more tired which
worked well."
Julian Illingworth |
"That
was just one match too far for me. I have had three weeks of
tournaments now. I played well under the circumstances but Julian
did well not to let me in the match. I was just too tired. I spent
13 hours in bed last night and it was still not enough to
recover."

Krajcsak ends Koukal's
home record in Prague ...
Tomas Forter reports
Nine-time
Czech champion Jan Koukal suffered a first-ever PSA defeat on home
soil in the quarter-finals in Prague. A good crowd of his fans
were there to support, but back problems prevented local hero from
performing at his best as he lost to Hungary's Mark Krajcsak
in straight games.
As well as winning nine national titles, Koukal had won six
successive PSA events in the Czech capital since February 2004,
but tonight he faced defeat for the first time in 30 PSA matches.
In the match between two Australians unseeded Tony James,
conqueror of the fourth seed yesterday, performed a great comeback
from 2/1 and 10/4 down to beat Bradley Hindle in five games.
England's Alex Stait thought he had won the first game against
second seed Julian Illingworth, but the ref decided to play
a let on one of Alex's pickups, and from then on Julian was always
in control.
Top seed Daryl Selby started well against Egyptian Amr
Swelim, but when Amr got in front he was very dangerous, like most
Egyptians, and he was able to level the score twice. In the
decider Daryl played a better length and forced the mistakes from
Amr's racket to win the fifth easily.

Koukal carries home hopes in Prague
Three Czechs started out in the main draw of the Prague Open as
the event moved on to the glass court for the first round proper,
but only nine-times national champion Jan Koukal remains to
contest the quarter-finals.
Koukal eased past qualifier Jens Schoor and now meets Hungarian
champion Mark Krajcsak, who beat Luca Mastrostefano in
straight games.
The only upset of the first round came when Tony James
recovered from a game down to beat fourth seed Julien Balbo to set
up an all-Australian quarter-final with Bradley Hindle.
