There
it is…
After years of planning, months of works, shooting, editing,
laughing, crying, delaying, and a few nervous breakdowns, David
Palmer’s “The making of a World Champion” DVD is available…
I had the honour of being given one of the first “non public”
copies, and I must say I enjoyed it tremendously, not to mention
that I learned a thing or two about David (don’t miss the b&w photos
of his dad and him with a little racquet).
And I was also surprised by the quality of the match extracts, where
you can really feel the atmosphere, the rhythm, the speed and pace
of the play…
In other words, guys, especially coming up to Christmas, a nice
learning/entertaining tool to have on your shelves…

"Squash
has been great to me over the years, it has given me a great
career and has made me the person I am and I hope that a lot
of people can get the same positive message out of the sport
that I have by sharing some of my experiences and special
moments captured on this DVD. "

David talks to Framboise about
'The Making
of a
World Champion'
It’s all very exciting, isn’t it?
Yes, Shaun Moxham and myself thought about making a DVD about two
years ago, and it took a lot of preparation, but finally, here is
the first in the series!
So you are already thinking about making another one?
Yes,
there will be three DVDs in all, about two hours each. This one is a
sort of “come and meet David Palmer” kind of experience, the second
should be more focused on Shaun’s technique and kind of training,
with more detailed squash routines, where Shaun’s style and
knowledge will be brought out. And the last in the series will be an
update on my career and technique advices that we won’t have
included in the first two.
OK. So let’s start with this one…
It’s a sort of a journey that takes you from the beginning, when I
started squash, Joe Shaw, then the meeting with Shaun, the first
victory in the British Open, the World Open title, to finish at the
second British Open victory in 2003, etc… Robert Edwards, the Voice
of Squash, and I talk about my life, my experiences, etc. It also
features highlights, photos from major events, and so on.
Then,
we show thirteen of our routines, ten squash and three physical
training routines. We had three or four cameras, and we were able to
shoot from all angles, so it’s really quite self explanatory.
And to finish, we’ve put three games of some of my favourites
matches; the fifth game of the British Open final I won against
Chris Walker; then the fifth game of the World Open 2002 where I
beat John White; and the fourth and fifth games of the Bermuda
Masters 2004 against Jonathan Power.
Where did you shoot it?
We started filming at the National Centre in Belgium for all the
interiors, courts, training, and so on. We shot the exteriors in
Bermuda, with Robert leading the interviews. It lasted a week, and
the background is stunning, typically Bermudan, little treasures of
places…
It must have been quite a lot of work, mustn’t it?
It
was, especially as the director we were working with was a great
specialist as far as the camera and editing work is concerned, but
didn’t know anything about squash, and Shaun and I had to work
pretty hard on the editing side of the project, to make sure that
the specifics of squash were brought forward. But in fact, it was a
very good thing, as for the next projects, we’ll be able to do 95%
of the work on our own…
I’ve got the feeling that you’re going to sell quite a few…
Well that would be great and hopefully our project will be well
received. It was a nice project to work on, we had a lot of fun
doing it, a lot of laughs, and the Bermudan background makes it even
more special I think…
Thanks Dave… |
