Anjema and Naude clinch Dutch titles
Tommy Berden
reports
Laurens Jan Anjema has continued his good run of form early
in 2008 by clinching the Dutch title for the third time in a row in
a packed Frans Otten Stadion.
The 25-year old from The Hague, who recently won the Bluenose Squash
Classic 2008 and was runner-up at the National Capital Open 2008,
proved too strong for his countrymen Dylan Bennett, who was able to
stick with Anjema until six all in the first game. From then on the
number 19 of the world upped the pace and never looked back. After
44 minutes Anjema ended the match with an 11-6, 11-3, 11-3 score
line.
Piedro Schweertman claimed the bronze medal.
The women’s event caused the most uproar in Amsterdam. 31-year old
Annelize Naude stunned the massive audience by bringing out
an amazing display of attacking squash, surprising the overwhelming
favourite Vanessa Atkinson in the process. Naude came back from a
9-3 deficit in the first game to take a 2-0 lead in games, before
the former World Champion and world number one fought back to level
the match.
In the fifth however Naude was absolutely brilliant, storming to a
14-12, 11-8, 6-11, 6-11, 11-3 victory over her higher ranked
compatriot. It was the second national title for the world’s number
17 and the first time in 12 years that Atkinson lost a match at the
Dutch Nationals.
Karen Kronemeyer beat Dagmar Vermeulen in the third and fourth
Play-Off match.

It's Kim & Stefan
again ...
Kim Hannes collected her 8th
National title with a 3/0 win over a nervous Annabelle Romedenne in
Herentals, while Stefan Casteleyn made it a remarkable 13th
title, beating Wim Van Asten 3/2.
The men's final was a hard fought but fair played match, with
Casteleyn taking a convincing and easy two-game lead. Wim just dug
in in the third and managed to start working Stefan around which
paid dividends as his opponent tired. An early lead in the fifth was
enough for Stef to control the rest of the match and by the end Wim
had nothing more in his tank. |
