Simpson spoils home
hopes in Edmonton
Canada's Matthew Giuffre couldn't quite complete the home win the
fans at the Royal Glenora Club in Edmonton wanted, as he lost out in
straight games in the final to England's Chris Simpson.
Canada’s Matthew Giuffre, who has hardly played this year, will head
into 2009 season with some needed confidence after finishing second
at the Servus Credit Union Edmonton Open men’s professional squash
tournament which concluded on Sunday.
The competition was an event on the Canadian Squash Circuit for the
2008-09 season as well as a stop on the men’s pro circuit (PSA).
The 26-year-old sixth seed from Edmonton lost Sunday’s final to
fourth-seed Chris Simpson of England 11-8, 11-9, 11-5. However that
defeat doesn’t put much of a damper on a super week for Giuffre.
He beat number-one seed Mark Krajcsak of Hungary, who won the past
two tournaments on the Canadian circuit, in Saturday’s semifinal
that went the full five games. In the quarterfinal, he upset third
seed Ryan Cuskelly of Australia.
‘’I was surprised with how well I did but it is an important for me
to have strong results at the end of the year,’’ said Giuffre. ‘’I
haven’t put in the training I would have liked but I think the time
off has actually helped my game mature. I wasn’t so wound up before
my matches.’’
Giuffre struggled with back problems this season. He returned to
action two weeks ago at the B.C., Open in Richmond, his first pro
tournament since January. His world ranking has tumbled to 115 after
starting the year at number-59. His career high is number 38.
‘’My ranking has taken a beating but this week I realized that I
have the ability to climb back to where I was,’’ said Giuffre. ‘’My
back has responded well and I need to string together a few more
good tournaments.’’
David Phillips of Montreal was eliminated in the quarterfinals while
Ian Power of Montreal, Jason DeLierre of Brossard, Que., Andrew
McDougall of Calgary, Matthew Serediak of Regina and Tyler Hamilton
of Dundas, Ont., were all ousted in the first round.
