17-Aug:
BACK AT THE HILTON!
Life as a squash writer isn't that bad after all ... On major tournaments
(well, apart from the British Nationals earlier this year where you may
recall my 'hotel from hell' article), we are most of the time in great
hotels, all over the world.
It's a tough job, but ...
And this year, as usual, the Hilton Sheffield is the Hotel Sponsor
of the English Open, and who is complaining????
Perfect situation, easy to park, lots of spacious rooms, an extremely nice
and patient stuff, delicious food at very reasonable prices, and a lovely
terrace, which has been my 'interview office' since I arrived on Monday
...
Tom
Waldron-Lynch, who just started his career under the Hilton Branch (he
comes from the Holiday Inn company), and who is at the moment managing not
only Sheffield but also Bradford, a busy man I'm here to tell you, was
only too happy to continue the previous manager's association between
Hilton and Eventis.
"The City of Sheffield is very keen on sports, and the great advantage of
living in a smaller city compared to London for example, is that when an
event is on here, it makes the headlines for the whole week!"
"We have so many exciting events this month in Sheffield, squash,
athletics, with Kelly Holmes coming here to stay as well, swimming
and even boxing.
"Not to mention that a lot of our guests do play squash, so Hilton's
involvement follows a certain dynamic that makes sense for all of us."

Like a lot of others, Tom supports squash in the Crucible:
"Squash is quite an unique event, and it's such an interesting idea to
have the Crucible, otherwise know for the Snooker, to be used to promote
squash."
Tom is a man that believes deeply in the role of Hilton in the development
of the City of Sheffield:
"We take pride in the fact that we are an integral part of the City. And
that's the main reason why we are keen to be involved in the events that
happen in Sheffield, instead of being on the sideline and watch."
A man of my heart, that Manager, a man of my heart.

"We
are delighted to be back at the Hilton Sheffield for the third year.
"It is a fantastic hotel and every year the staff make us feel more
and more welcome as we come back and see familiar faces. We look
forward to this being an ongoing relationship as we feel that it is
mutually beneficial to both parties."
