08-Apr-07:
England Reclaim
European Junior Title

In a tense final of the European Junior U19 Team Squash Championships in Brussels, top seed England beat No2 seeds France 2/1 to reclaim the title they lost to Germany for the first time in 20 years last year.

Joe Lee, the 17-year-old from Walton-on-Thames in Surrey who was runner-up in the earlier individual event, faced France's Gregoire Marche in the opening rubber.  Marche had lost to Lee in the individual quarter-finals, in straight games - but the 17-year-old from Aix-en-Provence fully tested the Englishman in the team opener, fighting back from 0/2 down to force a fifth game decider.

Lee, however, stuck to his task, and after 89 minutes secured a crucial 10-8, 9-7, 3-9, 6-9, 9-1 win which put the favourites ahead.

In the second match, France's 17-year-old Camille Serme, from Creteil, displayed the talents which took her to her second successive individual women's title only days before when she beat Victoria Lust, from Maulden in Bedfordshire, 9-1, 9-8, 9-3 in 36 minutes to level the tie.

There were wide smiles in the England camp when Adrian Waller, the British Junior champion from Enfield who failed to make the individual final as expected, made amends in the most decisive manner when he beat Frenchman Lucas Vauzelle 9-4, 9-1, 9-3 in 36 minutes to clinch the title for England.

In the play-off for third place, fourth seeds Netherlands beat defending champions Germany, the third seeds, 2/1.

England to face France in European Junior Final

The top two seeds England and France will contest the final of the European Junior U19 Team Squash Championships in Brussels, Belgium.

Favourites England maintained their clean sheet throughout the event by beating defending champions Germany, to whom they lost the title for the first time in 20 years last year.

Surrey's Joe Lee led the way in the semi-finals with a 9-4, 9-2, 9-0 win over Germany's Florian Silbernagl.  When Lee's team-mate Adrian Waller, from Enfield, beat Carsten Schoor England's place in the final was assured.  But in the best-of-three final rubber, Bedfordshire's Victoria Lust defeated Astrid Kern to make it 3/0.

Second seeds France reached the final for the fourth time since 1993 after overcoming fourth seeds Netherlands 2/1.  Gregoire Marche put France into the lead with a  win over Sander Kock - but the Dutch team hit back when Bastiaan Meulenbelt beat Florent Pontiere

France's newly-crowned European individual champion Camille Serme saved the day with a fine 9-1, 9-2, 9-6 win over Milou van der Heijden to clinch the place in the final.

Same again for Serme,
Mueller comeback takes title ...

France's Camille Serme - who turns 18 tomorrow - retained her European Junior title in Herentals with a comprehensive 3/0 victory over British Champion Victoria Lust in just 22 minutes to complete her record of not dropping a game throughout the tournament.

It was a harder task for Nicolas Mueller though. The Swiss top seed lost two close games to fall two behind to England's Joe Lee before fighting back to level at two-all, taking the third and fourth for the loss of just three points.

At 5-2 in the fifth it looked as if Mueller was cruising to victory, but now it was Lee's turn to fight back. Seeking his first non-English title, Lee recovered to lead 6-5, then points were traded in exhausting rallies until the Englishman gained matchball at 8/7.

Two unforced errors from Lee gave matchball to Mueller, who hit a rolling nick to become the first ever Swiss to claim the title.

A big thanks to Jos Aarts, who combined the role of Tournament Referee with ace photographer to great effect

Defending champion Camille Serme cruised into the women's final as she beat Germany's Sina Wall in three quick games in the first semi-final in Herentals. The French international now meets England's Victoria Lust after the recently-crowned British champion despatched compatriot Kimberley Hay, also in straight games.

In the men's event the top seed is also through to the final, Nicolas Mueller gaining revenge for his defeat at the hands of Oliver Pett in January's British Junior Open. His opponent will be Joe Lee, who overcame British U19 champion and second seed Adrian Waller in straight games.

Hay takes out second seed

Day two of the European Junior Championships in Herentals saw two rounds of action as the fields were whittled down to the last eight, and one major shock as England's Kimberley Hay beat second seed Lucie Fialova in the last sixteen round of the women's event.

Hay meets compatriot Victoria Lust for a place in the final, while France's defending champion Camille Serme meets Germany's Sina Wall.

The men's event sees three English players in the semis, with Joe Lee and Adrian Waller meeting each other while Oliver Pett faces top seed Nicolas Muller, hoping to emulate his surprise BJO victory over the Swiss.
