Fluid Line Golden Open International 2007
01 - 04 Jun, Kalgoorlie, Australia, $3.5k

04-Jun, Final:

[1] Scott Arnold (NSW) bt [2] Ryan Cuskelly (NSW)
        15/13, 2/11, 11/7, 11/7

Scott beats training partner
for Kalgoorlie title
Andrew Dent reports

Sydney’s Scott Arnold said skipping last week’s City of Perth International squash tournament probably gave him the edge over fellow New South Welshman Ryan Cuskelly in the final of the Golden Open in the West Australian gold mining centre of Kalgoorlie on Monday.

The 21-year-old Arnold beat 19-year-old Cuskelly 3/1 in a battle of the next generation of Australian squash stars.

The final was a close affair, with reigning Australian junior champion Cuskelly pushing Arnold for much of the match. After sharing the first two games, Arnold was able to ease away at crucial stages in the third and fourth.

Arnold and Cuskelly train with the Australian Institute of Sport in Brisbane, where they are both training partners and flat mates. Arnold has now won two tournaments over the past month, in Joondalup and Kalgoorlie, and has seen his world ranking rise to 78.

He said a solid month’s training with AIS coaches Byron Davis and Rodney Martin had paved the way for his run of successes.

Arnold will return to Brisbane for three weeks before heading to Adelaide for the South Australian Open and then to Clare for the Australian Open.

"We live together and train with each other so we know each other pretty well.

"Once we get on court we’re both pretty competitive, but when we come off we’re best of mates again.

"I think he felt the effects of playing four weeks straight. I took last week off and that made me a bit fresher. That week off was probably the only difference between us."

03-Jun, Semis:
Arnold and Cuskelly to meet again
Andrew Dent reports

Australian Institute of Sport training partners Scott Arnold and Ryan Cuskelly will meet in the final of the Golden Open in the West Australian gold mining centre of Kalgoorlie on Monday.

Top seed Arnold beat tenacious Queensland junior Zac Alexander 3/2 in the first semi-final on Sunday before Cuskelly was handed a spot in the final when veteran England-born West Australian Paul Ratcliff injured a groin muscle and was forced to withdraw in the third game with Cuskelly leading 2/0 at the time.

Arnold and Cuskelly have been the form players on the Australian leg of the PSA Tour. Arnold won the City of Joondalup open two weeks ago, beating Cuskelly in the semi-finals along the way, and was runner-up at the Merredin Open in WA in early May.

The 19-year-old Cuskelly won the Top End Open in Darwin and followed that up with the City of Perth International Challenge last weekend, his first two titles on the main PSA Tour.

Both players have seen their form rewarded with career-high world rankings – Arnold rising to 78 and Cuskelly breaking into the top 100 to be at 99.

Kalgoorlie

Kalgoorlie is Western Australia's largest goldfields town, famed for its fascinating gold rush history, fabulous old buildings and old gold miners' ghost towns.

'Kal' was born amid the 1880s gold rush when thousands of starry-eyed prospectors made the 700 kilometre journey east of Perth seeking their fortunes.

Vibrant Hannan Street (named after Irishman Paddy Hannan who struck gold in 1893) is lined with pubs, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants. There's the Hannan railway station, the Hannan hotel and you can even drink a pint of Hannan lager.

Kalgoorlie is still an active mining town and the 3.5 kilometre long, 1.5 kilometre wide Super Pit Mine - where 800,000 ounces of gold is produced each year - is mind-blowing. This massive hole in the Earth is as deep as Uluru is high with about the same circumference.

Veteran to take on young star
Andrew Dent reports

Veteran West Australian Paul Ratcliffe will take on rising star Ryan Cuskelly in the semi-finals of the Golden Open squash tournament in Kalgoorlie on Sunday.

The 36-year-old English-born Ratcliff is an unlikely semi-finalist after causing two big upsets on Saturday. He beat eighth seed Nathan Stevenson in the first round then accounted for third seeded Joseph Desira in the quarters.

He will find the going tough against Cuskelly, who is coming off a win in the City of Perth International last weekend.

The second semi-final will be between top seed Scott Arnold and young Queenslander Zac Alexander.
