31-Jan-05:
New Champions
in Germany
Fritz Borchert reports
from Mülheim ...
The much expected breakthrough at the
top of German Squash came to the forefront at the National Squash
Championships in Mülheim this weekend, where three of the
Semifinalists were under 22 years old.
In a repeat of last year's final, Hansi Seestaller took
revenge for his 2004 defeat by beating Stefan Leifels in a
hard-fought match lasting 87 minutes, 10-9, 4-9, 1-9, 9-2, 9-3.
However the Championships were marred by a serious and painful
muscle injury, to the right thigh, of defending women's champion
Sabine Tillmann, formerly Schoene.
The former German International was on course for a record 18th
title, having been one game to the good in her semi-final, only to
be forced to concede the match in the second game in her last
Championships before retiring.
In the final Karin Beriere beat Daniela Schumann 9-2,
9-1, 10-9.
