27-Jan-08, Final:

[4] Shelley Kitchen (Nzl) bt [5] Alison Waters (Eng)       4/9, 10/9, 9/10, 9/3, 9/2  (80m)

27-Jan, Final:
Kitchen claims Greenwich crown

The final really was a cracking match - Alison, after a slow and tentative start by both players, finally moved from 3/3 to take the first game 9/4. In the second game Shelley seemed much stronger and opened a lead of 6/2. Alison slowly clawed her way back in to level at 8/8, but Shelley remained strong and served out at 10/8.

In the third, after a very hesitant start by both players with the hand changing over constantly, Shelley again pulled out to a 6/2 lead, and again Alison pulled it back to 8/8, but then Alison served out stronger to take the game 10/9.

This really was looking a great match and the spectators were enthralled, but the fickle hand of fate seemed to set in and Shelley proved far too strong in the latter stages, and with advice and support from partner Anthony Ricketts went on to take the last two games 9/3 and 9/2.

A great final, and a shame as is often the case that there had to be a loser. However, all praise to Shelley for taking the title, and to both girls for a great match.
