Hometown Success for Grainger

US number one Natalie Grainger celebrated hometown success in the Harrow Greenwich Open when she beat second-seeded Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy in the final of the $25,000 event at the Field Club of Greenwich in Greenwich.

Favourite Grainger, formerly based in Washington DC and winner of the title in 1998 and 1999, was competing in the established event for the first time since relocating in Greenwich last year.

Both players had survived marathon five-game semi-finals. But, despite being stretched to five games for the third time in three days, it was local favourite Grainger who ultimately prevailed, saving a match-ball in the decider to defeat Kawy 13/11 in the fifth after 58 minutes.

"Omneya is an amazing player; so skilful," said 31-year-old Grainger of her 23-year-old opponent. "I was really lucky to win today. But I am years older so I must take the wins when I can!"

The downcast Abdel Kawy responded: "This tournament wasn't mine. I was winning when I was down, now lost when I was up. It is in my head. I don't know what is wrong but I made a good start to the year and I was strong all the way through."

Grainger's long-awaited Greenwich hat-trick brings her WISPA career title tally to 20.

24-Jan, Semi-finals:
Top seeds tested
Two marathon semis in Greenwich saw top seeds Natalie Grainger and Omneya Abdel Kawy through to the final.

Grainger edged past world junior champion Raneem El Weleily while Kawy came from 2/1 down to save three matchballs in the decider against Laura Lengthorn-Massaro.

Lengthorn-Massaro beats Bailey in Greenwich Clash

Tania Bailey, out of action most of last year following knee surgery, took higher-ranked England team-mate Laura Lengthorn-Massaro the full distance in the quarter-finals of the Harrow Greenwich Open before bowing out of the $25,000 event at the Field Club of Greenwich in Greenwich, USA.

The unseeded 29-year-old made her breakthrough in the first round, upsetting New Zealand's fifth seed Jaclyn Hawkes Bailey, who reached number four in the world in 2003, took the first game against Lengthorn-Massaro - but the third seed ultimately prevailed to win 10-12, 11-6, 11-7, 9-11, 11-3.

Natalie Grainger, the two-time champion from the USA who is seeded to win the crown again for the first time since 1999, was also taken to five games.  But the Greenwich-based 31-year-old beat Egypt's eighth seed Raneem El Weleily 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 3-11, 11-2 to set up a semi-final clash with fourth seed Vanessa Atkinson.

Atkinson, like Grainger a former world number one, despatched England's Lauren Briggs 11-4, 11-4, 11-4.
