11-Aug, Final:                    Draw & Results

[5] Wael El Hindi (Egy) bt Laurens Jan Anjema (Ned)
      13/1, 11/4, 11/9 (50m)

Wael keeps Heliopolis
title at home for Egypt

After three successive wins against seeded opposition, Laurens Jan Anjema's run finally came to an end in the final of the Rotary Heliopolis Open in Cairo as Wael El Hindi kept the title in Egyptian hands.

The win marked the fourth and biggest PSA title of El Hindi's career, and will undoubtedly give him a boost for the forthcoming Al Ahram World Open, also to be held in Cairo.

El Hindi extends a line of distinguished Egyptian winners of the title – including Amr Shabana, Omar Elborolossy and Ahmed Barada – since 1998, when England's Peter Nicol secured the trophy after one of his famous clashes with Canadian rival Jonathon Power.

Wael gets advice

10-Aug, Semis:

El Hindi carries home hopes into Heliopolis final

Four Egyptians made the quarter-finals of the Heliopolis Open, but it's left to fifth seed Wael El Hindi to deliver the hoped for home victory.

El Hindi beat England's Peter Barker in a tight four-game match, and will face the Netherlands' Laurens Jan Anjema in the final.

Anjema continued his sensational run as he beat  Mohamed Abbas in four games, his third consecutive seeded victim.

For LJ, currently ranked 27, it's his eleventh PSA final. El Hindi, the world number 20, will appear in his ninth, but both know that victory here will likely  give them a significant boost in the September rankings.
SEMI-FINALS:

Draw & Results

09-Aug, Quarters:
LJ downs Darwish in Cairo

Hopes of two all-Egyptian semi-finals were dashed when LJ Anjema and Peter Barker produced two upset results in the quarter-finals at the Cairo Stadium on a day which saw the top two seeds perish.

Dutchman Anjema produced the result of the day as he toppled top seed Karim Darwish in a five-game thriller - coming from 2-1 down to take the decider 13/11.

Barker, the only Englishman in the draw, took out double world junior champion Ramy Ashour in straight games, leaving Mohammad Abbas and Wael El Hindi, who created a third upset of the day in beating second seed Olli Tuominen, to fly the Egyptian flag in the semi-finals.

Draw & Results

08-Aug, Round One:
Four Quarters, Four Egyptians

After an extended qualifying competition, the main draw action got under way in Cairo today, with seven of the eight seeded players winning through to the quarter-finals.

The exception was Dutchman Laurens Jan Anjema's win over Shahier Razik. The Canadian is renowned for his lengthy matches, and this was no exception as Anjema eventually triumphed 12/10 in the fifth after 93 minutes, easily the longest match of the day.

LJ now meets top seed Karim Darwish, one of four Egyptians through to the quarters, with the possibility of two all-Egyptian semis. Darwish, runner-up here last year, despatched Italy's David Bianchetti in straight games.

Mohammed Abbas saw off the challenge of Yasser El Halaby, returning to the tour after dominating US college squash for four years, double world junior champion Ramy Ashour recorded the quickest win of the day against junior team-mate Ali Anwar Reda, while Wael El Hindi needed four games to put out another member of the triumphant Egyptian junior team, Tarek Momen.

In the quarter-finals Abbas meets Spaniard Borja Golan, Ashour faces England's Peter Barker, and El Hindi comes up against Finland's Olli Tuominen, the second seed who needed five games to get past Ramy's elder brother Hisham.

DRAW & RESULTS

Four quarters ... Four Egyptians !
07-Aug, Qualifying Finals:
Three days of Qualifying,
Three (or 4) Extra Egyptians ...

Unusually for a 16-draw event the Rotary Heliopolis Open featured a three-round 32-man qualifying draw - not a bad thing, as many players use the event to get used to Cairo conditions for the forthcoming World Open.

Even before today's third round, three extra Egyptians were guaranteed, as three of the four qualifying finals were 'local derbies'.

In the event Hisham Ashour went through to join brother Ramy in the main draw, getting the better of a five-game battle with Ashour junior's world team team-mate Omar Mosaad. Hisham's reward is a meeting with second seed Olli Tuominen.

Also through are youngsters Yasser El Halaby and Tarek Momen, while the fourth spot was claimed by Sweden's Badr Abdel Aziz.

As Badr said at last month's Alexandria Open: "I play for Sweden but my parents are from Egypt and it's home to me."

So that's an honorary qualifying clean sweep for Egypt, then ...

Darwish favourite for Heliopolis

The second edition of the Rotary Heliopolis sees last year's runner-up Karim Darwish installed as top seed for the $40k event.

With three rounds of qualifying many of the players will be using the event to get used to the conditions in Cairo ready for the Al Ahram World Open, some three weeks later.

Egyptian fans will be welcoming home Ramy Ashour, fresh from retaining his World Junior title and leading the team to victory in New Zealand, and a quirk of the draw sees him play team-mate Mohd Ali Anwar Reda in the first round.
