Hungarian Junior Open 2048
14-17 November, Szeged

Draws & Results

Finals Day

As Hannibal Smith used as a catchphrase in the old television programme “The A Team”, “I love it when a plans comes together” (not that many of the players here would even know who were The A Team, all too young for that).

The Finals have finished, prizes given and the players making their way home by various ways, it can be said without a doubt, the Head Hungarian Junior Open was a huge success! The crowd were treated to a good level of squash, played in a way that sport was meant to be played, hard but fair.

Wycliffe and especially England came out on top, with Scott Young (BU15), Declan Christie (BU17), Kerrie Sample (GU19) winning with Sarah Barnes from Wycliffe/France stopping the giant killing of the un-seeded home player, Fatime Farkas in the Girls under 17 Final. The home club supporters had something to cheer about when Gabriella Csokasi was crowned the champion in the Girls under 15 Final

In the end it was left to the Slovak, with the Hungarian name, Tomas Toth to pick up the Boys under 19 Title. Tomas and his father Gyula, have been great supporters of the Hungarian Junior Open in the past. In the Final Tomas survived a tight second set to beat the 3/4 seed, Johan Detter (SWE) 3.0.

So to finish I would like to thank my team, Piroska, Laci, Zoli, but especially Miklos and thanks to them, I can say “I love it when a plan comes together”.

Day Two

As we come to the end of another long, but successful day. I’m sitting writing this report while the juniors enjoy dancing at their players party, I’m thinking to myself, oh boy how times have changed for me!

Play started earlier at 9am and after 115 matches we were very happy to be finishing earlier. I have never been a big fan of the new scoring system, but I’ve got to say the difference it makes at the Grand Prix Junior Events is huge and maybe on a personal note, it will help me drag my old bones around the court a bit longer!

Again I have to commend the spirit that the players showed today, with some excellent squash, but always played with good sportsmanship. On the results side we had quite a few upsets, with the large contingent from Wycliffe School in England, winning many matches and gaining new friends.

Wycliffe Connection

The school will provide 8 finalists in the various age groups, with special mention going to Lyell Fuller (8th) and Scott Young (un-seeded) who will contest the Boys under 15 Final, much to the disappoint of the home fans who saw their top two seeds crash out. Although no grudges seem to be held as the home club have discussed doing some training camps with the Wycliffe Coach, Dave Norris. What a help that will be for the Szeged Juniors!

Home Support

The home supporters will hope they have some things to cheer about tomorrow, with 4 Hungarians making the Finals, with Ramon Gubi (3/4) beating his higher ranked opponent to reach the Boys under 17 and Fatime Farkas (un-seeded) upsetting the odds to reach the Girls under 17.

Day One

The 8th Hungarian Junior Open, part of the ESF Grand Prix Junior Circuit, got underway in Szeged today. Over 120 Players in the different age groups have played some great matches over the course of the day. Although many were keenly fought, all were played with great sportsmanship and fair play.

The new Par 11 scoring system helped keep the matches moving, in fact the biggest problem was we got too much ahead of schedule! Well as the Tournament Director I will be hoping for the same problem tomorrow.

In the older age groups there weren't many upsets, with the top four reaching the Boys under 19 semi finals and the top three seeds in the Girls under 19 coming through their Pools to set up the 1-3 play-offs.

So far everything has gone smoothly, mainly down to the hard work of club owner Miklos Papai and his team. They certainly make a big effort to make everybody feel welcome, maybe the reason that we see so many old faces/friends returning.

One of the largest groups is coming from Ireland, with Ulster Squash sending over a big group of players, something which is great for me since I come from Belfast. At one point I had to help translate, although my guy here, Laci, speaks very good English, unfortunately “Belfastish” is a little bit different!
