First and Last title for Leo
The
Hong Kong Junior Squash Open 2008 came to a successful end last
Sunday at the Hong Kong Squash Centre, as over 300 players and
supporters crowded the glass centre court to watching the new HK
junior champions born.
The Hong Kong team took 8 titles out of 10 divisions, including
all the Boys divisions - U19, 17, 15, 13, 11 - and also the
Girls U17, 15 and 13.
In the Boys under-19, top seed Leo Au Chun-ming beat his
compatriot, second seed Nelson Chan Ka-chi, 9-4,9-3,9-3 in
the final to win his first and also his last U19 title in this
event.
Korean champion Song Sun-mi defeated Liu Tsz Ling from
Hong Kong in the Girls under-19 final in straight games
9-3,9-2,10-8 to capture her first Hong Kong Junior title.

The
Hong Kong Junior Squash Open, which was first organized in 1968, is
one of the most popular junior events among the squash countries and
always attracts lots of junior players from all over the world to
come to Hong Kong to experience a competitive but enjoyable
tournament.
This year the tournament, which is sub-vented by Leisure &
Cultural Services Department and sponsored by HEAD and
Swire Coca-Cola, has received a new record entry of 466
participants from 12 short-haul and long-haul countries including
Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, Chinese Taipei,
Philippines, India, USA, Macau China, United Arab Emirates, and the
host – Hong Kong China.
These 466 juniors will compete for the 10 division titles, which
will be held between 13th to 17th August 2008 in Hong Kong. All
preliminary rounds, quarters and semis will take place at
Cornwall St. Park Squash & Table Tennis Centre, Kowloon Tong on
13th to 16th August. So as to strengthen the atmosphere, organisers
Hong Kong Squash organizer have decided to stage the finals at the
glass centre court of the Hong Kong Squash Centre, where
every year the world's best senior players compete in the Hong Kong
Open.
Local favourite Leo Au, current Asian Junior Champion, is top
seed in the Boys U19 event, along with his compatriots second seed
Nelson Chan, 3/4 seed Fung Ji Yang and Pakistan's
Naveed Javed. Korean Junior Champion Song Sun Mi tops the
Girls U19 seedings, with Hong Kong's top junior girl Liu Tsz Ling
second seed, with 3/4 seeds Swati Muchhal from India and
Ko Sin Ting from Hong Kong.
Last year HK juniors took 6 titles out of 10 divisions - GU19, 17,
15, 13, BU17 and BU15.
