Indian National Junior Championships 2008

Day Five Roundup

All matches go according to seedings on the penultimate day at the junior national championships in Chennai, with Tamil Nadu winning 5 titles followed by 3 titles for Delhi and 2 for Maharashtra.

Vikram Malhotra and Dipika Pallikal brushed off resistance from Aditya Jagtap and Surbhi Misra to confirm their supremacy in the under 19 boys and girls category. Vikram who turns 19 in a week looked solid winning his last junior event while Dipika regained her national title convincingly.

Karan Malik won his first major title and Harita Omprakash won her 5 consecutive national title in the under 17 category.


Day Four Roundup
 
Abhishek Pradhan seeded 3/4th craeted the biggest upset of the junior nationals here in Chennai when he defeating top seed Ravi Dixt in an enthralling 5 games in the boys under 17 category . Ravi wion the first game 13-11 hiting lengths to great effect but there on came the charge from Abhishek. Running down every ball that was thrown at him and hitting some delightful drops Abhishek won the second game 13-11, this is what he is know for - his figting spirit. Ravi held back the 3rd game convincingly with discplined squash and once gain Abhishek pull back to leveled the score 2-2. In the fifth it was Ravi all the way, leading 7-2 and with 3 match balls 10-7, and back again came Abhishek. Hitting hard and low and retrieving every shot Ravi started to float the ball. Abhishek took advantage and leveled the score at 10-10. With every players on the edge of their seat, Abhishek kept the pressure and waited for his opening winning with 2 consecutive winners.

Following Abhishek, was Karan Malik also seeded 3/4 playing with clinical precision moving 2nd seeded Ramit to all corners. 9-9 in the second game was the only time Ramit had to claw back into the match but with 2 errors Karan ran away with the game and the match winning the third comfortably. Tomorrows final will see a new champion in the under 17 boys - Abhishek v Karan.

Surbhi Misra from Rajasthan was just too good for Anwesha Reddy today in the girls under 19. Surbhi moved Anwesha well and forced her into making errors. She will play top seeded Dipika in the final tomorrow. In the boys section, Vikram Malhotra will play Aditya Jagtap.

Sandeep Ramachandran who has done exceedingly well lost to 2nd seeded Raghav Mehrotra in 5 games in the boys under 13. Both players played brilliantly with aggression, and skill. This is the future of Indian juniors and it is certainly bright!!

Day Three Roundup

There were a handful of upsets in the younger age groups at the junior national squash championships here in Chennai on quarterfinal day. 9 out of a total of 40 match played today saw the 'underdog' going through.

In the boys under 11 category, A. Rishdev seeded 5/8 from Chennai defeated 3/4 ranked Yohann Surti in 4 close games. Rishidev played some delightful drives and drops keeping Yohann always on the run winning in straight games. Robin Mann from Delhi who ousted second seed Sandeep Paswan from Maharasthra yesterday won once again in four games against Velavan from Chennai.

In boys under 13, 3/4 seeded Yohan Pandole was unable to keep up the speed and retreviving power of Sandeep Ramachandran continuing his winning streak while Abhimanyu Shah from Maharastra defeated state mate and higher ranked Aditya Khatri in straight games.

In the boys under 15, Vrishabh Kotian came up with the match of his life as he fought back from 2 games down against higher ranked Karan Thahryamal from Rajashtan.

Vrishab lost the first easily but in the second games both players were levelled at 10-10 with Karan edging him out 13-11. A huge comeback in the third and fought gave Vrishabh the confidence against a tyring Karan. In the end, Vrishab had 4 matchballs and converted it after 2 points. A great result from Vrishab having shifted from Mumbai to Chennai 6months ago. Delhi based Deepak Mishra outplayed Mumbai's Caran Arora in the quarterfinal in straight games.

The girls under 11 saw both Tamilnadu girls, Shamika Reddy & Neharika Balamurukan seeded 3/4 going down to Rayna Kishanchandani and Jui Kalgutar respectively. And Tanvi Jain defeated Rinki Soni in the girls under 17 category.

An exciting day overall with nearly 25% upset results.


Day Two Roundup:


Sandeep Ramachandran from ICL Academy a 7th standard student at Lady Andal School clawed his way back from 2 games down against a taller Suyash Sharma from Rajasthan on day 2 in the pre quarterfinal stage of the Boys under 13 in the National Junior Championships being held at the ICL Squash Academy in Chennai.

Losing the first two games 7-11, 9-11 Sandeep pulled it back comfortably winning the next 2 games 11-5, 11-6. The decider was a cliffhanger, Suyash with a series of winners raced from 6-6 to 10-6 match ball. With the match looking over, Sandeep showed his grit picking up every ball and played the remaining points to perfection.

Both players were charged up and Sandeep won the final game which went to the tie breaker 14-12. the final match score was 7-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6, 14-12. Sandeep had shifted to Chennai from Dubai less than year ago to pursue squash.

Another exciting match against 2 Mumbai lads where Samir Mistry went down to Pranav Merchant after leading 2-0.
All top seeds were win action today all sailing thru without any major problems.

Massive entry in Chennai

Expectations are high among squash lovers across the country who will be looking forward to an action filled Sub Junior – Junior National Squash Championship from October 31 to be held at the ICL Squash Academy, Chennai. There are over 400 participants from 19 states with the maximum participation from the home state of Tamil Nadu, with 123 players.

There will be 10 categories in the individual event - Boys & Girls Under 11, 13, 15, 17 & 19 years, this will be followed by the Interstate championships (3-8 November 2008) which has 4 events - Boys & Girls Under 15 & 19.

The top junior players vying for the Boys under 19 title include Vikram Malhotra & Aditya Jagtap, both from Maharashtra. These 2 along with the top 2 seeds in the Boys under 17 category, Ravi Dixit and Ramit Tandon were part of the Indian team that finished 4th at the World Junior Championships in Switzerland earlier this year.

In the Girls under 19 category Dipika Pallikal & V. Anwesha Reddy both from Tamil Nadu have been seeded to reach the finals.

Upcoming stars, Mahesh Mangaonkar from Maharashtra (Asia # 2 – Boys under 15) and Anaka Alankamony (Asian # 1 – Girls under 15) are the top seeds in the under 15 boys and girls category respectively.

"Squash in the country has seen a definite upward trend both in terms of international results as well as public awareness. As a result of which, the ICL Squash Academy is expected to see throngs of supporters and squash enthusiasts from all over the country during the championships."
