23-Aug,
Finals:
Saurav and Chinnappa retain National titles
Joshna was hardly made to struggle in her match with Dipika Pallikal.
Joshna led from the front, lead throughout the match. Dipika played
a catch up game, but couldn’t keep up with Joshna. Joshna won 11-8
11-7 11-2 in 23 minutes.
The Secunderabad Club squash courts have never witnessed so many
people coming to see a squash match. This was not any squash match,
it was the finals of the ICL National Championships, between the
current National Champion Saurav Ghosal of Tamil Nadu and Siddharth
Suchde of Maharashtra.
Everyone was looking forward for an upset of last year’s finals.
After the first game, it looked like there would be an upset,
Siddharth Suchde won a closely fought first game 13-11 in 30mins. In
the second game, Siddharth led 8-7. The experienced Surav picked his
game up to another level and won the next 5 points to win 11-8.
At the end of the second game it looked like Siddharth was tiring,
Saurav took advantage of the situation and moved Siddharth to all
corners of the court.
By then it looked all over for Siddharth. Saurav won the 3rd and 4th
game convincingly 11-5 and 11-4 in a game lasting 77mins.
In the professional event Parthiban of ICL AcademyTamil Nadu beat 10
time defending champion and compatriot Balamurugan in a closely
fought match. Parthiban won 12-10 8-11 11-7 11-8 48mins.

"It is
always a great feeling to be the National champion, though the first
title when I was just 14 stands out as very special.
"Every National is a different proposition and one needs to be
consistent over the years to win these titles. I am happy that I am
able to do that."

“I think the decisive moment came in
the second game when I levelled the scores at eight with a drop
shot.
"I dedicate this win to my grandparents — Dr. S.B.N. Ghosal and Dina
Ghosal."

22-Aug,
Day Four:
Suchde shocks Ritwik again
Pradeep
Vijayakar reports
Maharashtra's Siddharth
Suchde was ecstatic after causing the big upset on semi-final
day of the 56th ICL National Squash Championship being held at the
Secunderabad Club. The third seed beat No 2 Ritwik Bhattacharya
11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-4 in 54 minutes. It was the second time
Siddharth beat the champ having ousted him in the final of the
Herald Maritime Open at the Otters Club in 2004.
Siddharth looked very focussed and determined. He lost his
concentration in the second game at 2-all. He let Ritwik take quick
four points and struggled to keep up. The third game was very close
nothing separating the two but Siddharth got his concentration back
and Ritwik made three crucial unforced errors at 8-all and Siddharth
never looked back.
The beginning of the fourth saw Ritwik suffering a conflicted
injury. He was bleeding and given almost 25 minutes injury time.
That appeared to have distracted Ritwik and he lost his focus.
Siddharth was just too good for Ritwik.
Said an exhausted Suchde:
"The
court was hot and bouncy and the ball kept rolling. There was any
amount of retrieving and tight squash. I managed to play the crucial
points well making no mistakes when it counted. In the first three
games the scores were almost level and the man who hung in won. Also
the one who played the points mentally well.''
About the final against Saurav Ghoshal, who beat him in last
year's final, Suchde said: "Last time I lost badly to him. I
have some plans this time which I will keep to myself. We play so
much with each other it makes the task beating him difficult. But I
am going to try.''
None of the other seeds were troubled or made to struggle.

21-Aug,
Day Three:
Quarter-Finals in Hyderabad
ICL Academy trainee Anaka Alankamony upset 3/4 seed Surbhi
Misra from Rajasthan in straight games. From the onset Anaka kept a
fast pace and moved Surbhi to the front with effective boasts and
drops to take an unassailable lead 9-4 in the first. In the second
game Surbhi leveled the score at 6-6 being 4-6 down but made a
couple of unforced errors which enabled Anaka to clinch the second
game 11-8. The third also followed a similar patter with Anaka
winning 11-8. Anaka was delighted after her victory and said “I am
very happy I achieved my target of reaching the semi finals.”
In the Women’s it looked like there would be another upset, again
between two colleagues of the ICL squash academy, Chennai. The gutsy
Harita Omprakash, 5/8 seed, narrowly lost to 3/4 seed Anwesha
Reddy 3-2 in a match lasting 41minutes. All the games went so
close that it was hard to pick a winner, but in the end it was the
experienced Anwesha who won. It was great learning experience for
Harita, who now looks to have come of age and a threat to the top
four women in the country.
In the Men’s Quarter Finals 3/4 seed Harrinder Pal Singh Sandhu
survived a ferocious onslaught from his fellow colleague from the
ICL Academy, Naresh Kumar seeded 5/8. Naresh won the first game
11-8. Most of the first game was evenly fought, nothing separated
the two players. An unforced error at 9-all by Harrinder did him in.
Harrinder regained his composure in the 2nd game, playing some solid
squash and hitting winners on both flanks. Not to be out done Naresh
took full control of the third game and won it relatively easy 11-7.
The fourth game was crucial for both players, Harrinder had to win
if he wanted a place in the Semi Finals, and Naresh had to win as he
was tiring fast. Harrinder quickly took a 4-0 lead with some amazing
winners, he was in full control of the situation. Naresh had
different plans and went ahead 5-4. From then on it was anybody’s
game. But a consistent Harrinder prevailed in the end winning 11-9.
The fifth game was a no contest; Naresh was just too tired to give a
fight and tamely lost 11-2, in a match lasting 55 minutes.
The other seeds in the Men had it quite easy, all winning without
losing a game.
In the professionals, Rohit More of The Cricket Club of
India, Mumbai upset 3/4 seed Sanjay Pawar also of Mumbai in a hard
fought five games, in a match lasting 46 minutes. Rohit was down 2-1
and going into the fourth game, kept the ball in play and waited for
an opportunity to finish the ball. Rohit won that game 11-9. By the
end of the fourth both players looked completely drained of energy.
In the end it was the fitter Rohit that won and made it to the
semi-finals. |

20-Aug,
Day Two:
Mangaonkar upsets Jangra
Mumbai’s 14 year old Mahesh Mangaonkar playing in his first
senior nationals, caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far
by beating 5/8 sead PO Vikas Jangra of the Services 3-2 in
the pre quarters of the 56th ICL National Squash Championships,
being played at the Secunderabad Club.
Mahesh, a 9th grade student of Don Bosco – Borivali, Mumbai, played
with a lot of grit and determination. He showed great maturity in
his shot selection and temperament. Being 2-0 down and 4-6 down in
the fourth game, didn’t deter him from going for his shots. At that
stage it looked like Mahesh went into overdrive mode winning seven
points in a row to win 11-6 in 9 mins.
Going into the fifth game, Vikas looked like he was tiring. Mahesh
took a quick 2-0 lead only to see Vikas catch up. Few unforced
errors by Vikas at 3-3 saw Mahesh run away to a 9-3 lead only to
lose service once before winning 11-4 in a match lasting 55 minutes.
Mahesh is currently ranked two in the European Circuit in the under
15 age group and finished second in the under 15 category in the
Asian Individual Championship held in Korea this year. He is
currently the under 15 National Champion.
For the first time the National squash championships are being
played to 11 points, point a rally system.
