Ireland’s

Netherlands, the second seed, in a closely contested women’s final at
Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club today as a packed audience saw an Irish
player win a major professional title on home ground.
Perry took the first game easily 9/4, but Naude then powered her way

Powers into Irish Final
Gina Menzies reports from Dublin
A tense opening game had spectators on edge in tonight’s semi-final of the
women’s event in the Irish Open held in Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club.
Irish number one, and world ranked 12, Madeline Perry took a game
to settle down before beating England's Stephanie Brind 3/9, 10/9,
9/0, 9/4.
The first game saw Madeline hit the tin on many points and mis-time her
shots. Her opponent, the third seed and world ranked 21, played a focused
game with plenty of lobs, followed by drops to unsettle Perry.
Madeline played a better length, with a mixture of drops that nicked and
quickly taken volleys to race to a 8/3 lead in the second game. Stephanie
played her way back into the game until her racket broke in two at 8/8.
Perry played a superb volley to get game ball at 9/8.
The game was not over yet, Stephanie had a chance to go two games up as
she served at 9/9. A very brave drop gave Perry a second chance to serve
at 9/9 and finally win the game on a stroke.
Madeline then raced ahead to take the third game 9/0. With renewed
confidence the outcome was never in doubt. Stephanie’s mistakes mounted
while Madeline’s winners increased. A magnificent drop volley gave Perry a
8/4 lead, another nicked shot won the match in style for Madeline.
In tomorrow’s final she faces Annelize Naude of the Netherlands,
seeded 2 and ranked 15 in the world. Naude won her semi-final against
Tegwen Malik of Wales 9/4,9/5 9/4.

Pakistani Players' Visa Woes
The entire Pakistani squash team was forced to withdraw from the Irish
Squash Open after they failed to obtain visas, it emerged today.
The team’s three players were due to compete in Dublin, but
Yasir Butt, Arshed Iqbal Burki and Mijid Khan, all ranked in the PSA top
100, were all withdrawn.
The organisers said it was unfortunate that the players had been unable to
obtain visas.
“We’re extremely disappointed but we know that the process of getting
visas in some countries is slower,” said technical director Martin
McDonnell.
The case has attracted headlines in Pakistan, which has produced a
succession of world squash champions despite having less than 400 courts.
“It’s a problem for every country and it something that the PSA are trying
to tackle," said McDonnell. “There is another
tournament in Switzerland that has experienced the exact same thing.”
The Pakistani players applied for visas in Pakistan on April 1, shortly
after they learnt they had qualified for the Irish Open, but were told it
would take four weeks to process them.
