14-Jul-06:
Western Province
Sweep the Board
Liz Addison reports from Pietermaritzburg
The final day of the highly successful PricewaterhouseCoopers
Interprovincial Squash Championships played in Pietermaritzburg
belonged to Western Province, who swept the board to take the
Men’s A, Women’s A and Women’s B sections.
After the first 3 days' play in the pools where Western Province had
the sad record of beating Free State 20-1 but then succumbing to
Northerns A 9-14 and Easterns 8-16 they upset the favourites Kwazulu
Natal in Thursday’s semi-final to face Easterns again in Friday’s
final. Not many would have bet on their chances but they proved the
pundits wrong.
Against the Odds for Western
In the final Gary Plumstead gave Easterns their first points when he
outlasted Bruce Kaiser in five games but Province’s captain Zuko
Kubukeli who has played consistently throughout the week levelled
matters by accounting for Lloyd Barcza in straight games.
In Wednesday’s pool clash Ireland’s Liam Kenny (Easterns) had got
the better of Rodney Durbach, now based in Cape Town after retiring
from the PSA circuit. Friday’s tussle saw a very determined Durbach
take the first game, lose the second, scrape home 10-8 in the third
and then capture the fourth to give his team a 2-1 lead.
Western Province’s Clinton Leeuw, now ranked 5 in the country,
started tentatively in his encounter with nuggety Craig Wapnick,
losing the first game but concentrating on the basics he turned the
tables taking the next 3 games to clinch the tie. Eastern’s captain
Craig van der Wath cantered through the final match dropping only 6
points against Gary Wheadon however a jubilant Province had captured
their first Jarvis title since 1995.
Gauteng took third place beating Kwazulu Natal 18-6.
Kwazulu Natal B won the Men’s B section with Eastern Province B
triumphant in in the C section.
Hat-Trick for Western Women
Not to be outdone Western Province’s women’s side collected their
third consecutive Kaplan Cup title when in a repeat of last year’s
final in Pretoria they defeated top seeds Northerns 16-7.
For Northerns Tenille Swartz and Farrah Fenner accounted for Karen
van der Westhuizen and Siyole Lusaseni respectively but Province’s
depth turned the match in their favour with Gina Robinson, Sasha
West and Liesl Claxton winning their respective matches.
Western Province B women’s side inflicted a 17-8 defeat on Northerns
B to win the B Section.

13-Jul-06:
Western bundle out top seeds
In one of the biggest turn arounds in many years, Western
Province, who had won only 1 match out of 3 in their pool,
bundled out top seeds Kwazulu Natal with national champion
Adrian Hansen at the helm in the crossover play-offs, to stake a
place in the final.
Kwazulu Natal, who had dropped a mere 3 points against Gauteng and
earned maximum points against Border A and Northerns B were
undisputed favourites.
Western Province’s number 3 Clinton Leeuw drew first blood beating
Jason Barry in straight games while his teammate Zuko Kubukeli
notched a further win edging through 10-8 in the fourth against
David Heath. The crunch came in the match between Rodney Durbach and
Hansen. With Durbach leading 6-4 in the first game Hansen pulled up
injured - apparently a recurrence of a hamstring injury and was
forced to concede.
Despite victories by Steve Coppinger and Carl Hampson, the
respective Kwazulu Natalian number 2 and 5 players, over Gary
Wheadon and Bruce Kaiser Western Province were through to the final
which they have not won since 1995.
It is the fourth consecutive year that Hansen has been injured
during Jarvis and this injury could well keep him out of the
forthcoming Test Series against the Netherlands from 8th-14th August
In the final Western Province will play Easterns in a repeat
of the pool match which they lost 8-16 on Wednesday.
Easterns, who could be in line to win their third consecutive final,
were in complete control in their 16-9 defeat of Gauteng – a repeat
of last year’s final. For Gauteng, Gareth Schnehage and Devon
Hendrikse accounted for John Argyle and Lloyd Barcza but Liam Kenny,
Craig van der Wath and Craig Wapnick, each of whom has appeared in
the last two finals, sealed Gauteng’s fate.
In the Men's B section final Eastern Province will meet
Kwzulu Natal C with Eastern Province B clashing with Gauteng C in
the C section final.
Winners of the Kaplan Cup in 2004 and 2005, Western
Province, spearheaded by Karen van der Westhuizen and Siyole
Lusaseni 2005 meet Northerns in a repeat of last year’s
final.
Western Province had a comfortable 19-9 win over eastern Province,
the third seeds while Northerns had no trouble in disposing of
Gauteng 17-3.
Undefeated in the B section, Northerns B look set to take the
honours for the second consecutive year when they meet Western
Province B in the final round.

12-Jul-06:
Northers outgun Western Province on Day Two ...
Sixth seeded Northerns led by Greg La Mude, who has been
coaching in St Louis, caused a major upset on the second day when
they outgunned second seeds Western Province 14-9 in the Men’s A
section.
Jan Hendrik Mulder opened Northerns account when he scraped home
10-9 in the decider in a roller coaster match against Clinton Leeuw,
ranked 5 in South Africa. Mulder took the first two games 9-5 9-4
only to lose the next two without scoring a point. Zuko Kubukeli
levelled matters for the coastal side by beating Mulder’s younger
brother Nico in straight games. Despite Rodney Durbach disposing of
Le Mude in straight games, victories by Lazarus Chiluyfa and Craig
Ruane over Gary Wheadon and Bruce Kaiser respectively saw Northerns,
who had suffered a 20-2 loss against Easterns on Monday dash Western
Province’s hopes.
Easterns and Western Province clash in Wednesday’s last round of the
pools and this could provide lots of fireworks. Should Western
Province win, there could be a 3 way count-out for two teams to
advance to the knockout play-off stage.
In Pool A Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng both registered runaway
victories against Border and Northerns B respectively to set up an
interesting encounter on Wednesday to decide the winner of their
pool.
In the women’s A section Northerns and Western Province look well on
track for their final clash on Friday with Western Province dropping
only 1 point against the hapless Gauteng side and Northerns coasting
through against Easterns.
Sarah Fitz-Gerald playing for Kwazulu Natal turned in a another
sparkling performance against Juanita Le Roux, Eastern Province’s
number 1 but together with teammate ,Samantha Herbert’s straight
game victory over Anlen Murray, it was not enough to give Kwazulu
Natal the edge as they faded away 6-14 to third seeded Eastern
Province.
The men’s A and B sections see the finals round in the pools being
played on Wednesday with the first cross-over play-off on Thursday
followed by the positional play-offs on Friday. The round robin in
the women’s A and B sections continues until Friday.

Safe Start for Top Teams
in Pietermaritzburg
The PricewaterhouseCoopers Interprovincial Squash Championships got
off to a quiet start in Pietermaritzburg on Monday with the top
seeded teams in both the men’s and the women’s sections not being
really extended.
Top seeds in the Jarvis Cup Kwazulu Natal A, spearheaded by
national champion Adrian Hansen and Steven Coppinger, scored a
whitewash 20-0 victory against the Northerns B team, which had
gained promotion by winning the B section in the 2005 championships.
Western Province, the second seeds, led this year by Rodney Durbach,
also had an easy first round encounter against Free State with
Durbach the only player to drop a game. Regardt Schonborn, a student
at Trinity College in America, surprised by quickly getting off the
mark and winning the first game against Durbach, but thereafter
Durbach found his rhythm taking the next three games.
In the Kaplan Cup for women Northerns and Western Province,
seeded 1 and 2 respectively, both notched comfortable wins.
The Northerns - Kwazulu Natal clash which Northerns won 17-5
provided the excitement with former World Champion, Sarah
Fitz-Gerald clearly demonstrating how she ruled the world for nearly
a decade and is rated as one of the four best women players ever.
Despite having retired, the Australian has not lost much of her
expertise as she clinically disposed of South African National
champion, 19 year old Tenille Swartz 9-7 9-4 9-0.
Northerns number 2 and 3 players, Farrah Fenner and Vivienne Doeg
each lost games to Samantha Herbert and Leora Greenwood but their
results were not in doubt while Tuks students, Mary Anne Boden and
Cara Willoughby coasted through their matches in straight games.
Second seeded Western Province had an easier passage against
Easterns who were without their number 1 player Angie Clifton-Parks
and could not field a full side.
The championships continue all week with the final rounds on Friday
14th July.
