Arnold
& Pittock take Joondalup titles
Australia’s Scott
Arnold fought back from match ball down to beat top seeded
Dutchman Dylan Bennett in five games in the final of the City of
Joondalup Open in Perth on Sunday.
The 21-year-old Arnold was trailing by two games to love and was
on the brink of defeat before he fought back to win in five
games
The win gave Arnold his second PSA Tour title, adding to the
Hilton Open he won in Perth this time last year.
Arnold is originally from Sydney but is now based in Brisbane
where he trains with the Australian Institute of Sport squash
program.
He beat AIS training partner Ryan Cuskelly in the semi-finals
while Bennett accounted for South Australia’s Luke Margan.
Top seed Amelia Pittock won her second Women’s
International Squash Players’ Association title when she beat
Queensland’s Peta Hughes in the women’s final.
For Pittock, from the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, it was
her first tour success since she won the Queensland Open in
August 2003.
19-May, Semis:
Arnold Powers Into Perth Final
Australia's sixth seed Scott Arnold earned himself a surprise
place in the men's final of the City of Joondalup Open after
beating compatriot Ryan Cuskelly in the semi-finals at Mullaloo
Squash Centre in Perth, Western Australia.
The 21-year-old from Brisbane made his breakthrough in the
previous round where he ousted New Zealand's second seed Kashif
Shuja in five games.
Cuskelly also caused an upset in the quarter-finals when he beat
third seed Aaron Frankcomb in a 114-minute marathon.
But it was a fresher Arnold who beat the unseeded Cuskelly
in 40 minutes to make his sixth Tour final.
Arnold will face top-seeded Dutchman Dylan Bennett, who needed
just 27 minutes to overcome Australia's No8 seed Luke Margan.
The final of the women's event will feature the two top seeds
from Australia. Favourite Amelia Pittock beat fourth-seeded
compatriot Lisa Camilleri while second seed Peta Hughes had to
fight back from two games down to beat fellow Australian Donna
Urquhart, the No3 seed.

19-May, Quarters:
Cuskelly downs Frankcomb
in a marathon
Rising Australian squash star Ryan Cuskelly upset the
seedings once again when he outlasted Tasmanian Aaron Frankcomb
in a two hour epic in the quarter-finals of the City of
Joondalup Open in Perth on Friday night.
The 19-year-old Cuskelly from northern New South Wales moved
into the semi-finals when he beat third seeded Frankcomb. He
will now play fellow New South Welshman Scott Arnold, who
caused an upset of his own when he beat second seeded New
Zealander Kashif Shuja.
“I’ve played Kashif a few times before but I’d never managed to
beat him,” the sixth seeded Arnold said. “Our matches have gone
to five games a couple of times so it was good to finally get a
win against him.
“I went on court with a good game plan and I stuck to it, and
having (AIS coach) Rod Martin there to motivate me between games
helped.”
The 21-year-old Arnold and Cuskelly have played a number of
times as juniors and train together with the AIS squad in
Brisbane.
“Ryan’s obviously playing really well at the moment – he won
last week (at the Top End Open in Darwin) and he beat Aaron here
so it’s going to be tough match,” Arnold said. “We know each
other’s games very well.”
The other semi-final will be between top seeded Dutchman
Dylan Bennett and Luke Margan, the eighth seed from
Adelaide.
The top four women reached the semi-final stage with relatively
straightforward wins.

Cuskelly keeps up
winning ways in Perth
Reigning Australian Junior squash champion Ryan Cuskelly
continued his recent good form when he upset seventh seed Martin
Knight of New Zealand in the first round of the City of
Joondalup Open just north of Perth on Thursday night.
Cuskelly won his maiden PSA Tour title when he took out the Top
End Open in Darwin on Sunday by defeating top seed Luke Margan.
He was just as impressive in his 3/0 win over Knight, which puts
him into a quarter-final against third seeded Tasmanian Aaron
Frankcomb.
Top seeded Dutchman Dylan Bennett and second seed Kashif Shuja
also progressed to the quarter-finals, as did Margan, who beat
Kiwi Graeme Wilson.
