Mayfair Lakeshore Open
2007
14-19 Feb, Toronto, Canada, $13k |
19-Feb, Final:
Stoehr
takes Lakeshore title
Isabelle
Stoehr
celebrated her
first appearance on the WISPA World Tour in the New Year in
significant style when she upset top seed Kasey Brown in
the final of the
at the Mayfair
Lakeshore Racquet &
Fitness Club in Toronto.
After being taken to five games in
the quarter-finals by USA's Latasha Khan, third seed Stoehr
cruised into the final when she beat unseeded local star
Carolyn Russell in straight games in the semis.
But
Brown, the fast-improving Australian who made her world top 20
debut in December at 17, had reached the final without conceding a
game. Indeed, the 21-year-old from Queensland had dropped only 17
points in three matches!
Stoehr, however, was made of sterner
stuff: The 27-year-old from Chambery in France dashed Brown's
hopes of a seventh career title by beating her opponent
in straight games
to win the fifth tour
title of
her career.
Both players will
shortly head south to play in next month's
Burning River Cleveland Classic
at the Cleveland Racquet Club in Cleveland, Ohio, in the USA. The
draw of the $21k
WISPA event predicts that the pair will meet again in the
quarter-finals ...

"I’m really happy I won this
tournament.
"The
final was really a great match, I was relaxed, well focused on my
game plan. The score doesn’t reflect the length and the battle as
we have to fight for each rally, I had to be very patient, and
fight away…
"I’m
all the more happy because I really played well I thought, I
enjoyed my squash, everything was at the right place at the right
time… When you win, and on top, you win how you should, it’s
happiness all around… I have the confidence, I know what I can do
in training, it’s all about being able to reproduce it during
matches. During this final, I showed that when I’m relaxed, I can
play ok.
"Now I’ve got to go on working, and working, and working, but this
gives me a boost of confidence, and to be honest, I’m really
hungry for victory, for bigger victories. I saw that some things
are in place in my game, but I saw also the work to be done, the
amount of work to be done..
"I’m going home now, another tournament this weekend,
the
Pyramides in France…. This morning, I got a few texts on my
mobile, it’s a nice feeling when it’s first thing… It’s such a
pleasure, those moments… one really enjoys them to the full…"

18-Feb, Semis:
Brown
& Stoehr in Lakeshore Final
Top seed Kasey Brown and third seed Isabelle Stoehr will contest
the final of the Women's Mayfair Lakeshore Squash Open after
straight games wins in the semi-finals of the new WISPA event at
the Mayfair Lakeshore Racquet & Fitness Club in Toronto.
Stoehr, the third seed from France, ended the brave run of local
heroine Carolyn Russell - beating the 32-year-old from
Vancouver, who was the only unseeded player to reach the
semi-finals, 9-3, 9-1, 9-1.
While the 27-year-old is celebrating her 10th WISPA Tour final
appearance, Brown is marking up her 11th. The 21-year-old from
Queensland in Australia beat Mexico's fourth seed Samantha Teran

Russell Reaches Toronto Semis
Carolyn Russell
returned the city where she gained an Engineering Masters degree
- and mastered fellow Canadian Alana Miller to reach a
surprise semi-final slot in the Women's Mayfair Lakeshore
Squash Open at the Mayfair Lakeshore Racquet & Fitness
Club in Toronto.
The unseeded 32-year-old from
Vancouver made her breakthrough in the first round when she
upset Australia's sixth seed Amelia Pittock.
Miller, from Winnipeg, caused a
bigger upset in the first round when she beat top seed Sharon
Wee. But the Malaysian had arrived in Toronto with no bags,
clothes, racquets or shoes - after spending some 35 hours at JFK
airport with flights cancelled due to snow storms. The world
No18 ended up being kitted out by organiser Nicole Pirko
- but was unable overcome her adversity.
In the
quarter-final, Russell beat Pan-American champion Miller 10-8,
5-9, 9-5, 9-6 - and goes on to meet Isabelle Stoehr, the
third seed from France who had to fight back 1/2 down to beat
USA's No5 seed Latasha Khan 10-8, 2-9, 1-9, 9-6, 9-7.
