22-Oct-07, Men's
Final:
Bradley
has a Ball in Dublin
Bradley Ball took the Bymac Leinster Open Title in Dublin after a
3/1 victory over Egypt's Omar Abdel Aziz. The Fitzwilliam crowd were
treated to a hugely entertaining final with little or no mistakes by
either player. Ball was dominant in the opening game taking it 11/4
but the Egyptian found his rhythm to take a very close second set
13/11. The pace of the match didn't drop throughout the course of
the 78 minute final and in the third set with both players under
pressure Ball proved the stronger taking it 11/5.
Aziz came out in the fourth set determined to take Ball the full
distance and had two game balls at 10/8. However two well worked
rallies from the Englishman saw him level the score at 10/10 and
seeing his opponent tire went on to take the game 12/10 and with it
the title.
In the Men's A section veteran Derek Ryan recovered from the
disappointment of failing to qualify for the professional event by
beating Arthur Gaskin. Gaskin raced into a two set lead but Ryan
called on all his experience to claw himself back into the match.
Having changed the pace of the game and taking the match to a fifth
set Ryan's class proved too much for the Carlow man.
Gaskin will rue the missed chance to finally beat the eight times
Irish National Champion Derek Ryan and will now until the Irish
National Championships in December for another chance.
21-Oct-07, Women's
Final:
Noom and Gloom for Mylotte
in Dublin Final
Kevin Moore reports
Ireland's Laura Mylotte will
be disappointed with the outcome of the Bymac Leinster
Open having missed out on a glorious chance to capture her second
tour title, losing a tight final to top seed Orla Noom.
A tense first game saw the girls trading shots and tussling for
position in the centre of the court. At five points a piece Mylotte
took the initiative with some great driving and closed out the
game 9-6.

Looking relaxed and in fine form Mylotte raced to a six nil lead
in the second game and seemed to have the beating of her Dutch
opponent. A string of unforced errors however let Noom back into
the game and although Mylotte had a game ball at 9/8, Noom
clinched it 10/9 to tie the match at one all.
Again in the third Mylotte looked in control at 6/4 but could not
seem to keep out the errors, losing the third 9-6. Noom then
sensed her chance of victory and played some great squash to close
out the fourth and final game 9-6 and with take the title at
Fitzwilliam.

Quarters:
Ford Rumbles on in Dublin
Ray Byrne reports
English Qualifier Ben Ford continued his impressive run in
the Bymac Leinster Open as he despatched of 5th Seed Tom Hoevenaars
in four games.
32 year-old Ford, who reached a career high ranking of 130 this
month was made to work hard for his place in the semi-finals as he
dropped the first set to his Dutch opponent going down 11/7. However
Ford quickly took control in the second game racing into a 6/0 lead
and didn't look back as he won the following three games 11/6 11/6
11/3 to book his place in the semi-finals against the Egyptian
second Seed Omar Abdel Aziz.
Aziz took on Malaysia's Mohd Nafiizan Adnan and progressed in 66
mins in an entertaining 3/1 victory. Aziz took the first two games
11/8, 11/7 and seemed to be
coasting into the last four when he held the lead at 5/0 and again
at 7/2 in the third game before Adnan came roaring back to take the
game 8/11 to the delight of the
crowd in Fitzwilliam. Adnan started the fourth well and seemed to
have his opponent rattled, Aziz however managed to weather the storm
and closed out the
fourth 11/8 to book his place in the semi-finals.
Top seed and World Number 33 Bradley Ball kept up his
impressive form this week as he beat fellow Englishman Alex Stait.
Ball takes his place in the semi-final draw
with minimum fuss without dropping a game thus far. He will look to
continue this rich vein of form in Saturday evening's Semi-Finals
when he takes on Hungarian Mark Krajcsak. Krajcsak also
through in straight games saw off New Zealand's Martin Knight
playing some clinical squash, Krajcsak has been in impressive form
this week and should
provide a stern test for the top seed Ball.

Top Seeds Meet in Dublin Final
Kevin Moore reports
Galway girl Laura Mylotte will meet top seed Orla Noom
from the Netherlands in Saturday's final after the top two seeds
eased through their semi finals. The pair have looked in super form
and have showed their class by progressing to the final without
dropping a set in the tournament so far.
Mylotte, world ranked 47, saw off Vicky Hynes from
England dropping only 10 points in a 9/4, 9/0, 9/6 victory.
Not to be outdone, Noom dispatched her English counter in a
similar scoreline, dropping just 11 points in the process.
The home crowd can look forward to an all-Irish final of sorts in
Fitzwilliam today with Orla Noom having strong Irish links through
her mother, who originally comes from Dublin. The eagerly
anticipated final is expected to be a real close encounter with Noom
ranked just two places ahead of Mylotte at world number 45.
Mylotte who plays for the host club Fitzwilliam is expected to have
huge local support as she prepares for today's final at 2.00
(entrance is free).

First Round:
Mylotte and Shields
Through to Quarter-finals...
Kevin Moore reports
There were mixed fortunes for the seeded players in the first round
of the Ladies Bymac Leinster Squash Open. Top seeds Orla Noom
from the Netherlands and second seed Laura Mylotte from
Ireland eased through in comprehensive three nil wins.
However, number three seed Dagmar Vermeulen from Germany made
an early exit from the tournament as she lost to up and coming
English player Sarah Jane Perry.
The home crowd were then treated to an unexpected home win with
Ulster's Kerri Shields beating number four seed Milou van
der Heijden, three games to two. Shields emerged victorious from
a gruelling 50 minute match which down to the wire, eventually
taking the deciding game 9/7.
As for the men, English qualifier Ben Ford continued
his good run by reaching the quarter-final with a three two victory
over fourth seed, Scott Arnold from Australia.
Egyptian second seed, Omar Abdel Aziz had a more comfortable win as
he eased into the quarter-final dispensing Jens Schoor of
Germany three nil in 25 minutes. |

17-Oct, Qualifying Finals:
Irish Women fall
at final hurdle ...
Kevin Moore reports
After great wins in their first qualifying matches last night all
three Irish ladies missed out on the chance to line out in
tomorrow's main draw.
English pair Sarah Jane Perry and Fiona Moverly proved too strong
for their Irish opponents Katie Wilson and Claire O'Brien, both
winning three games to nil. Tanya Owens however had a great chance
against her Spanish opponent, Laura Alonso Perez. After Perez won a
very tight first game, Owens closed out the second 9/4. After a
close start to the vital third game Perez found her touch and
started to attack the front corners, tiring Owens in the process.
The Spaniard went on to close out the match three one and earn a
place in the main draw
Ford drives through
...
Conqueror of Irish hero Derek Ryan in the first round, Ben Ford won
through to the main draw after another tough four game match. Ford
continued his good form by beating Jason Barry of South Africa in an
entertaining 55 minute match. Joining him in the main draw are
fellow Englishman Neil Hitchens, Scot Alan Clyne and German Jens
Schoor.
16-Oct, Qualifying Round One:
Irish Girls Impress
Kevin Moore reports
Day one of the qualifying rounds has seen a superb performance by
the Irish girls with three out of the four competitors advancing to
within one win of securing a place in the main draw of the Bymac
Leinster Open.
All three proved too strong for their opponents and ran out
convincing winners in the end. Tanya Owens from Tyrone had
the toughest game of the night beating her Danish opponent three
games to one. She is joined in tomorrow's qualifying finals by
Katie Wilson and Claire O'Brien. Carlow girl Roisin
Brennan was however unable to make it four out of four as she
found the pace of her Argentinean opponent too much, losing three
games to nil.
Irish men struggle against
tough opposition
The Irish men could not match
the impressive performance of the girls in the qualifying
competition at the Fitzwilliam Club, Dublin.
Niall Rooney (Galway), Rory Byrne (Carlow) and
Peter Emmanuelle (Dundalk) all came up against opponents that
had too much strength and experience on the night.
There was more disappointment for the Dublin crowd when, in the last
match of the night, local hero Derek Ryan, the many-time
Irish Champion, lost out in a close four-game match to England's
Ben Ford.
Home hopes in the men's event rest on Arthur Gaskin, who
takes on top seed Bradley Ball in the first round, while Owens,
Wilson and O'Brien will be aiming to join Laura Mylotte and
Kerri Shields in the women's main draw.
Qualifying concludes at the Fitzwilliam Club on Wednesday.

Irish Players Squash up to
Top Professionals in Dublin
Preview from Kevin Moore
Professional squash athletes from around the globe arrive in Dublin
this week to compete for the Bymac Leinster Squash Open
title. The professional event on both the men’s and women’s tour
sees top Irish players compete against some of the world’s best
internationals from England to Egypt. There is real hope of an Irish
winner this year with Laura Mylotte from Galway seeded two in
the women’s draw.
Mylotte is currently ranked 47 in the world and is expected to
compete very strongly for this year’s title, showing great recent
form in reaching the last 32 of the biggest event on the tour, the
British Open last month. Her main rivals are top seed Orla Noom
from the Netherlands, just two places above Laura in the rankings at
45 and Englishwoman Kirsty McPhee, ranked 57 who plays Irish
wildcard entrant, Kerri Shields in the first round. Both
Shields and Mylotte play their first round matches on Thursday
evening at host venue Fitzwilliam LTC.
Four top Irish girls will also battle it out with the international
field in the qualifying rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday for the four
highly sought after remaining spots in the main draw. The Irish
contingent are Tanya Owens and Katie Wilson, both from
Northern Ireland and Claire O’Brien and Roisin Brennan,
both from Carlow.
In the men’s draw Englishman Bradley Ball is top seed and at
32 in the world is strong favourite to take the title in
Fitzwilliam. His first round opponent is Irish number three and
world number 154, Arthur Gaskin, but Ball is expected to
prove too strong for the Carlowman. Ball’s main competition should
come in the form of up and coming 24 year old Egyptian Omar Abdel
Aziz, whose current world ranking is 49. With Egyptians Amr
Shabana and Ramy Ashour currently dominating world squash at numbers
one and two in the world respectively, Omar will be looking to
follow in his compatriots footsteps with a good performance in
Dublin.
All eyes will be on Dubliner Derek Ryan (former world number
7) on Tuesday as he competes in the qualifying rounds for a spot in
the main draw. The 37 year old retired professional will attempt to
battle his way through the qualifiers along with other Irish
hopefuls Niall Rooney, Rory Byrne and Peter Emmanel
in the qualifiers.
Entrance for this year’s event is free for every match and play
starts at 18.00 each night at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club,
Appian Way, Dublin 6. The women’s final takes place at 14.00 on
Saturday, October 20th and the men’s on Sunday the 21st at 15.00.
Over 100 Irish league players from all over the country will also be
battling it out over the week in the lower divisions. |
